Aura lasting few days

Fipfop · 19/02/2023 17:16

So before I start, I have seen medical professionals. Just wanting some others experiences.

4 days ago I started with a flashing light in one eye as well as shimmering water in peripheral vision. It comes and goes very often through the day. I went to the optician today as I was worried about retinal tear and luckily my retina is fine. They've contacted ophthalmology who have said a visual aura.

Has anyone had a migraine like this? It's lasted days, no headache, not the kaleidoscope effect I've seen people describe. Not really sure what to expect from now.

I haven’t had it last days but yes my migraines start exactly like you describe
I try to take painkillers ASAP ( I do get headache ) and sleep
I also find I crave something salty ( crisps ) and a full fat coke
but what have the medical professionals said ?
first few times it happened I was very scared but I can feel it coming on and try to head it off if I can

Thanks @Mercedesbenz2022 for replying. They were basically checking for a retinal tear, there wasn't one and so they've said visual aura. I've had no headache but was sick early hours of Friday morning. They've not said anything other than that, I don't know how long to expect the aura to last, I don't know if I should be expecting any other symptoms. It's all really weird. If this is still going ok in a week, I don't know if they're ok with that. I'm going to call the gp for more advice in the morning but I've never had a migraine before so not really sure what to expect!

Yes occasionally I am sick too .
given that it is lasting and your first one , then I definitely think going to gp again is a good idea for a full check , bp certainly .

If you're on a combined contraceptive pill you need to seek advice. They're contraindicated in migraine with aura.

Fipfop · 19/02/2023 19:37

@cptartapp that's good to know thank you!

Stroke risk.

bluetongue · 20/02/2023 03:13

I get aura without headache (also get headache without aura - I’m weird). Mine normally last about half an hour and have the classic shimmering zig zag / kaleidoscope in my field of vision.

Hope you get it sorted.

Ireallydohope · 20/02/2023 05:23

Sounds like it could be epilepsy as they often come with auras

Hopefully it's just due to a stress related headache

leepinglizards · 20/02/2023 05:51

About a month ago i started intermittent fasting and reducing carbs. Around the same time I had 5 migraines in a week, now I think about it the two are probably related. Have you changed your diet recently?

Roselilly36 · 20/02/2023 05:58

It’s so horrible, I can empathise OP, I was suffering really badly with aura. I assumed it was my MS playing up, saw Neurologist, said about the aura, no headache, but pain in my right hand, feeling sick etc. he said not MS symptom, but migraine with aura, he thought due to hormone changes, as
I am going through menopause and to see GP for treatment should it persist. I was getting 4 episodes a day, saw GP, she prescribed estrogen patches, 🤞none since, been on the patches just over a month now. I hope the aura improves soon for you OP.

Fipfop · 20/02/2023 06:38

@bluetongue everything I've seen said half hour max for an aura. Hopefully it stops today. Thanks for replying!

@leepinglizards I actually had a few really busy days where I definitely wasn't eating enough. I wonder if that's triggered something. Thanks for replying! Maybe need to look after myself a bit better.

Fipfop · 20/02/2023 06:43

@Roselilly36 it had started to worry me that something neurological was going on. Reassuring to know your doctor said these not ms symptoms. I'm actually 5 months post partum and breastfeeding. So I'm assuming my hormones are still all over the place!

With my standard migraines I get aura sometimes with and sometimes without the headache - it can be quite scary. I also have atypical migraines which don't usually present with aura but can last up to 9 days. So it's not too much of a stretch to think you're having a very long migraine that's presenting with aura.

Edthehorse · 20/02/2023 07:02

Did they put drops in your eyes to dilate them before they looked for a tear?

Fipfop · 20/02/2023 07:26

@inigomontoyahwillcox that's interesting to know you've had aura lasting few days. Can I just ask when this happens do you go get checked out or just wait it out?

OP posts:
Fipfop · 20/02/2023 07:29

@Edthehorse yes they put drops in my eyes. Said they saw a bit of a shadow in one so have referred me to the ophthalmologist but they've said they're happy not to see me and it's just a visual aura. I've asked to keep the appointment anyway unless it stops in the meantime.

Edthehorse · 20/02/2023 07:55

Do you have an eye hospital near you? We have an eye casualty in my city. Of you do I would go.
It does sound very very similar to how my detached retina presented

I just wait it out these days as I know what it is - but if this is the first time you've had it I would definitely get it checked out by 111/your GP.

Fipfop · 20/02/2023 08:10

@Edthehorse ok definitely worth getting further checked then. We do have an eye hospital. So just because the optician couldn't see a tear doesn't necessarily mean there isn't?

My husband gets aura only migraines every couple of weeks. He's been to the opticians several times and also his GP. Both found nothing wrong. Bloods etc all ok. He keeps a migraine diary of food/ stress levels etc but so far no pattern has presented itself. They only last about an hour but he's quite wiped out afterwards.

Hope you get it sorted OP, it sounds rotten.

Fipfop · 20/02/2023 14:41

@LadyOfTheCanyon thanks for replying. I can definitely see I've got quite a few triggers for migraines at the minute even though I've not had migraines before. Really feel for people who get this alll the time!
