the hospital are saying that it's just febrile convulsions.

This morning I posted this
saying that dn had had three fits in the past year. the last was this morning.

however this afternoon he had another one and was taken to hospital by ambulance, they said he was fine, just febrile convulsion and that he'd come out of it ok so not to worry (like that's possible as a parent), they took him home and he's had another one in the past hour and they're back at the hospital .

He is on antibiotics for an ear infection, and has a high temp which is proving difficult to bring down, but three fits in 12 hours isn't normal is it? or is it?

i know that febrile convulsions are often caused by a high temp. so that could be the cause of it.
very worrying for them though

I know of children that have had convulsions when they've had a temp, but never this many.

also, bil had epilepsi as a child so not sure if there could be a link, although my mum (who once was a dr's receptionist so naturally must have knowledge of all things medical ) claims that epilepsi is not hireditory.

febrile convultions are so worrying but are often caused by the high temp. they are usually only a major cause of concern if they last for longer than 60secs or so and they will likely want to do some tests if that is the case. my DH had alot of FCs as a child (MIL told me this) and he is perfectly healthy with no ill effects of the convultions hope he gets well soon xx

I know hope scary it is and how difficult to think that having a 'fit' is ok. My DS2 had his first febrile convulsion on Wednesday he's 18 months old.I've really struggled to get his temp down below 40 for 2 afternoons in a row. His fit came out of the blue and he only developed the high temp immediately after it but this is day three of the illness day 1 of antibiotics and he's much improved and temperature is under control. I'm hoping it was just a one off.
Hope your nephew is on the mend soon

They usually investigate after three so called febrile convulsions. Two in one day though is not typical as the actual convulsion itself will get the temp down.

20mths, is also getting a little old for febrile convulsions.

They should really be keeping him in for observation.

My ds has epilepsy at first they said complex febrile convulsions as he never just had one it was always more and they investigated further when he had more. In a space of 14 weeks he had 14. 7 of which were on the same day and he certainly didn't have a temperature with those ones or any sign of illness. He was 15 months old when it all started and is now 3.4 years old on meds and under control.
We are always asked if anyone in the family has epilepsy but when you ask about it they say it can lower the seizure threshold but can't say one way or another if it is hereditary or not.
I hope he gets better soon he is in the best place.
A convulsion is caused by a sudden spike in temperature rather than the temperature so if his temp keeps going up and down he will be more likely to have more than one.
