what to do with burns?

DD1 messing about at tea time. bit into a chicken kiev - filling splashed on her cheek. Now has a 1cm circle area where the skin has peeled off (!).
Feckin PCT closed our minor injuries unit down last year. closest MIU is 10 miles away.
We've soaked her in cold water. no swelling. redness gone down already. she's stopped wailing.
Am loath to drive her to the MIU - don't really think they'd say anything other than what we've already done.
Now - I am a nurse but never done injuries/burns.
Don't want to appear insane or paranoid.
Should I take her there or not?
anyone with any experience of burns? what would they do anyway?
Or will I appear neglectful if i don't? it is very small and not deep. clean. stopped hurting.

I'd suggest an antiseptic ointment and to cover it for tonight at least, tomorrow leave it open if it does not look infected to dry out. This all for a minor burn as you describe. Maybe some calprofen or something for the pain. I always use germolene antiseptic cream, it contains a bit of local anaesthetic, on ds's open wounds.

dab it with lavender essential oil. Its fab on burns.

berolina · 08/02/2008 18:35

I would keep a cold flannel on it until it has reached the same temp as the rest of the skin, then Germolene or something containing panthenol as described.

SisterBee · 08/02/2008 18:36

would the lanvender hurt like buggery.
just remembered - did my dissertation on the properties of lavender - it's really the only thinhg it is good for.
oh god having flashbacks 15000 words all about lavender! aaaaaaaaagggggggg

doesn't sting at all.

itsahardknocklife · 08/02/2008 18:48

Aloe Vera. You can buy tubes of the gel in the chemist, but I keep an Aloe Vera plant at home especially for burns. Cut off a leaf and squeeze the gel onto the burn. It cools it and helps it heal. You can apply as often as you like.
For future reference, Ikea do hardy and cheap Aloe Veras.

Don't put any creams on
see here cool & keep dry

NoNickname · 08/02/2008 19:00

How long ago did it happen? You need to cool it down rapidly with cool water only. Do not put any creams on it. You should really put it under running cool water for ten minutes to stop the heat burning through into the deeper layers of the skin.

DD burnt her hand badly enough to need a skin graft when she was 2.

I didn't put it under water for long enough. As Nonickname says it should be at least 10 minutes.
Also wouldn't put anything on it at all as burns get infected very easily

SisterBee · 08/02/2008 22:03

Right - didn't take her the 10 miles to MIU. (bad bad mother)
It all cooled down pretty quickly. Although i didn't hold her head under a tap (that would have drowned her) I held a soaking flannel on it and kept rinsing and recooling it for a long time - more than 10 mins. All redness and swelling gone. She has got a small cm size raw bit. like a deroofed blister but it's not deep and not weeping.
Discovered in the back of medicine cupboard a long lost burn plaster. have no idea why its there - no one in this family have ever burned themselves. a clear one with sort of gel stuff in it. have put it on and seems to be o.k. it's not hurting any more.
will see how it is tomorrow.
Although if i do discover that she should have been seen and some miracle medicine applied i'm going to hate myself forever.

no miracle medicine, just a sulpher based dressing will be applied. If it is small, I would be inclined to just keep it very clean and moisturise with a non scented moisturiser.

lulalullabye · 08/02/2008 22:08

P.s as it is on her face, they tend to just use liquid paraffin, which you can get from any chemist.
