Chronic UTI’s

I really need some help and advice!

I had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago. I’m all recovered and my long term partner and I like to have sex, but in the last year or so I just keep getting UTI’s and it is making me so miserable. I feel like they are maybe triggered by sex but I don’t know how to avoid them so now I just feel like I need to avoid sex forever. I go to the loo before and after sex, we are careful about having clean hands/bits, I drink water. We don’t use condoms as I can’t get pregnant and we are monogamous but it’s really ruining our sex life.

The last UTI symptoms I have had for a MONTH, and I am still not better. I have a constant burning/stinging and feel like I need a wee, it’s never relieved by going to the toilet, I just sit there for 30 mins in agony. I did a dip test (showed infection and ketones) and a MSU test at the GP which was ‘inconclusive’ so I’ve had a load of one type of antibiotics and I did feel slowly better (had to go back and get more though) but when I finally had sex, the next day all the symptoms came straight back even worse.

The pain is like a burning and needing to wee. I notice that when I lie down it seems to go away eventually, but is worse when I stand up or sit down. I’m now starting to worry that it’s something else (like can an STD suddenly show up?) and GP isn’t really doing much to help me. I’m going to ask for different antibiotics and do another sample but in the meantime I am not sure what I can do to handle the searing burning pain? Any advice?

D mannose
Or these me decide on this product: Bio-Kult Pro-Cyan Advanced Multi-Action Bacterial Formulation Targeting Urinary Tract with Cranberry Extract and Vitamin A – Pack of 45 Capsules https://amzn.eu/d/3nWH5ZU

Bottle washing - I hate this because it takes time but it works, E. coli usually causes most UTIs

I use a peri bottle off Amazon for it and dr bronner unscented soap

please discuss a vaginal hormone cream with your gp.
often in women who have had a hysterectomy ( not sure about your ovaries or age) the problem isn't UTIs it's a lack of eostrogen. The cream is so helpful if that is the underlying issue .
good luck sounds awful

This. You need Ovestin. Not vagifem as that can only be used internally - with Ovestin you can use it externally as well.

Ask for a referral to urology. They can do some tests to see what’s going on inside your bladder and prescribe long term antibiotics if necessary. I’ve been on daily antibiotics for intercystinal cystitis for many years now and increase them as and when I need to and I find they really help.

Thanks! I kept my ovaries so not sure if I am in menopause or not. This is unbearable though. I sent an online consult to my GP but haven’t heard back and I know they are struggling as it's so busy, I just keep getting nitrofentoin given to me and it’s not doing anything! Last time this happened I actually had pain in my urethra when I sat down and started wondering if it was like a stone or a cyst as I could feel something, but nothing was there. To me it feels like the actual external area is the source of the pain but then it doesn’t explain why I am struggling to constantly urinate

I have smothered myself in vagisil - has actually worked to some extent taken out a lot of the constant agony.

definitely you need investigation bu a urogynae team but the HRT topical preparations are something you need from the GP.

They are going to do another MSU then I will book an appt. At least then perhaps we can rule out a UTI. The numbing cream has worked a treat tbh which is surely odd if it was a UTI? I am going to ask about atrophy and HRT cream. I think I need to find out if I am in menopause as I have no idea. Since my hysterectomy I haven’t noticed dryness until now

No one has asked for an update 🤣 but I didn’t have a UTI, I ended up using lidocaine and it got better only to immediately return after sex a week later. Again it went with lidocaine. So I have a GP appt as something is going on. DP doesn’t even do anything vigorously but it seems like I am now so sensitive it’s causing a lot of pain

I was so miserable with chronic uti, I tried everything. Then the doctor put me on long-term low-dose Nitrofurantoin and it has really been a life saver. I haven't had a uti in the 12 months since I've been taking it. I'd highly recommend giving it a try.
