Post nasal drip/mucus in throat

Any suggestions on how to help, please? I’m on prescription anti histamines and a steroid nasal spray, but it’s still a total pain. The mucus in my throat makes me cough which is really annoying. It’s been going on for a few years now and I have cycled through various different prescription nasal sprays but they seem to become less effective over time. I use a saline rinse at night to try to clear my sinuses.

If relevant the mucus is always clear, no infection, it started after having Covid, and I also have acid reflux which I know doesn’t help matters!

Any home remedies that have helped you?

When you use your steroid nasal spray, look at your feet and then spray. It stays where it should then. Also sniff warm salt water off a teaspoon up your nose, it’s not pleasant but really helps.

I do look down to spray but maybe not far enough - I will try that tonight, thank you! I use the squeeze bottle sinus rinse thing where you make up saline from little packets, Nielmed, is the water sniffing better? Sometimes I feel like fluid is just rolling around my head and then I feel it run down into my tonsils 🤢

Yeah as gross as it is, you need to sniff it so it goes down your throat or you spit it out of your mouth. I have chronic rhinitis, so I feel your pain. X

God it is so annoying. I feel like I am choking sometimes. This week has been awful so I wonder if it is the start of the cherry blossom coming that has set it off, my nose is just streaming constantly!

Nasal douching helped and I also took tincture of mallow.

Hi , I’ve just been diagnosed with pnd it’s so uncomfortable, the Dr suggested a humidifier any recommendations please ?

soupfiend · 01/02/2024 07:15

Look into acid reflux as well

Mustardfan · 01/02/2024 07:26

I had a post nasal drip and mucous in my throat and a dry cough for years, I asked my GP for a referral and they referred me to an ENT doctor. He told me he thought it was acid reflux. I didn’t believe at first. I came round to the idea, and when I went on the acid watcher diet by Dr. Johnathan Aviv it cleared up.

Tinkerbell1987 · 01/02/2024 10:28

Thankyou for your replies , my Dr didn’t mention acid reflux . I’ll start the steroid spray and see how it goes , I fully sympathise what your going through it’s so uncomfortable & having to clear the throat

soupfiend · 01/02/2024 18:58

There is no holistic joined up thinking in health care

So you'll have post nasal drip, and if that is caused by or made worse by acid reflux you might need that treated but acid reflux is notoriously difficult to 'get rid' of its more that you manage the symptoms but that doesnt mean the PND disappears either

But each professional will only be bothered about one of those things in isolation

When I replied, I was more thinking of the OP, I didn’t see that you had tagged your question into an old thread. I use a defuser as a humidifier - one for using with essential oils, but I don’t always add an oil to it.

I have post nasal drip and GERD linked to my asthma.
I've got a nasal spray and use a pillow to prop my head at night. I also take omneprozole too.

I have the same op and cannot get rid of it. It's horrible

GUAIFENESIN (gwye FEN e sin) treats cough and chest congestion. It works by thinning and loosening mucus, making it easier to clear from the head, throat, and lungs. It belongs to a group of medications called expectorants.

You can buy cough medicine containing Guaifenesin over the counter and it's safe to take every day.

My mother had pneumonia and afterwards had a post nasal drip and mucus in her throat that she would wake up from feeling like she was choking and couldn't breathe.

She has all manner of medications and whatnot and I threw the whole lot away and bought her cough medicine congaing Guaifenesin and she takes a spoonful of an evening and the mucus/phlegm/catarrh his no longer a problem.

During the day she keeps an olbas oil or similar inhaler stick on her and will randomly sniff it to help keep her airways clear and her nose and sinus unblocked.

Oh hello, this was my OP. I switched to a different nasal spray (Dimysta) which has really helped but it’s still a pain - just now while it’s cold my nose runs constantly when I’m outside, and right now I have the actual cold too. I have a wedge pillow in bed per pp’s suggestion and I also run an anti allergy air purifier in our bedroom. I suspect I am mildly allergic to our cat at some level too.

How long did it take for you to notice any differences with the Dymista op?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/02/2024 16:05

About a week @faxnoink - I’d had it years ago when it was first launched in the UK and it worked really well for hayfever so it was actually me who suggested it to the GP. Once it was working she put it on repeat for me.
