I’m not sure what the link is. But I’ve heard that the doctors reduce your thyroid dose once in menopause. But I cannot get a confirmation.

Oh right they've only just used my meds

They only just put my meds up and all they ever say is everything down to the thyroid

Thyroid does control
a lot of systems in the body. It’s finely tuned and when it’s not functioning properly can cause a whole host of issues. Which I didn’t appreciate until I had to be on thyroxine.

Im on both hrt and thyroxine. Is your thyroxine at the right balance? I understand that’s frustrating too as sometimes symptoms are linked to either too high or too low thyroxine.

I've had underactive thyroid for over 18yrs it's never been stable yet swings both ways there forever messing with meds but dr said all my symptoms point to menopause so I just wondered if seen as it's worse then normal is it down to the menopause

It could be both.

Rummikub · 11/02/2023 16:27

Possibly.
I’ve been on thyroxine for just under 9 years and I thought but sleeping, mood, hair loss was down to that.
Id slipped an odd period here and there but thought nothing of it.
was like this for about 5 years.
On hrt now and it’s amazing! Sleep better, mood better, hair too.

I’ve had hypothyroidism for 25+ years.
I have also gone through surgical menopause and am on HRT. I have 6 monthly TFT blood tests and my medication hasn’t changed.

I constantly feel awful though, have ever since diagnosis. However, menopausal symptoms can be hellish for many women. It isn’t just hot flushes. It can be debilitating for many and, at my worst, untreated and pre diagnosis of my hypothyroidism, and during peri right before my surgery, I’d be hard pushed to say which was worse.

Been on thyroxine for 26 years, since around age 20.

I've had much worse symptoms with perimenopause than I ever had with hypothyroidism. Aches and pains specifically. Extreme Brain fog despite good thyroid fine levels.

Hypothyroidism used to just give me thinking issues, low mood, anxiety, muscle weakness, fatigue and brain fog. And actually weight loss when extreme (I think I just didn't eat.)

Peri gave me all that (despite being euthyroid!) plus weight gain, extreme joint and muscle aches, aching feet, sore knees, mood swings, rage and extreme tingling / burning hands and feet (b12 completely ruled out.)

How you take your thyroxine and blood tests really impacts ups and downs, so make sure that's all good. And definitely try hrt.

Oh and insomnia and over heating at night and then lastly hot flushes. Never ever had a sleep issue prior to peri.

Yes it does I developed full blown myexdema when I first went into perimenopause. It was horrible and still is but just not as bad with out thyroid medication.
