Show me a pic of your bunions…

Weird request, I know!! I have been diagnosed with a moderate bunion on my right foot ( that was the only one xrayed but I think I have it on both feet) Last week I was referred to a podiatrist on nhs so assuming will take ages to see one . My right toe is causing me issues and discomfort but not excruciating.

I’m just curious what others have experienced with their bunions and how it looked for you. Did you have surgery? I actually have bupa through work so if this referral takes ages I will ask for a private one. I’m 43 and never wore heels and always wear good quality shoes. I’m all for comfort and mainly walk in Salomon hikers. I am active and love walking so this is a bummer

I had bunions on both feet done. One when I was 38 and one when I was 40. I had it done with local leg block so was awake both times. It was quite a long recovery but such a relief after. They haven't moved since.
I was told mine were genetic and not down to poor footwear.

Thanks @stayingaliveisawayoflife I can’t imagine having it done awake! Yikes! I’m
glad to hear you haven’t had any further issues since your surgery

It was a quicker recovery time and I could go home an hour after they had finished. They also did a leg block so no pain at all for 48 hours. I did hear some interesting noises but I had music on my headphones to distract me. I'm happy to answer any questions about it.

I have just had my bunion done. Didn't look too bad (will try and put my picture on here) but it was becoming a bit of a nuisance. May have the other one done but 8 days in feel like a century at the moment, so I will decide next year when I will see whether it was worth it or not.

@Travelban would you mind if I asked how long it took from referral to getting your surgery? It was it done privately? Are you in a lot of pain since having it done?

@LadyGardenersQuestionTime thank you . How was your recovery after having both done together? My GP said that if surgery is suggested to do it when I’m still young and fit. Was yours done on nhs or privately?

@stayingaliveisawayoflife thank you. I did have a C-section but there was no bone grinding sounds 🤣 the idea of being awake for this kind of surgery freaks me out!

Oh my God, you all have beautiful feet! Sorry if they hurt though. Here are mine. I’m 47, never ever worn heels. Right one was operated on age 16 but immediately reverted back.
I don’t know what it’s like to not have painful feet.
I wear orthotic insoles, but they only make a moderate difference.

I had it done privately as it was.keyhole
I wasn't in a lot of pain, I coped with paracetamol for thr first few days, then nothing at all. Still early days bit doing well so far. I can hobble around quite well in the shoe. I had GA.

Travelban · 09/02/2023 15:53

Ps I am nearly 51. Surgeon said the same, have it done whilst young and fit and also before it gets too bad

McConkeysPlate · 09/02/2023 15:59

You all have lovely feet! I have had mine since I was a child (hereditary). I have considered having them done as they get vey painful but not sure I could do the recovery time.

Strange things bunions, only thing I don't have. My mum has them very badly.

Travelban · 09/02/2023 16:16

It wad quite a hard decision to have mine done as it wasn't terrible,.but I could see it was getting worse and less shoes were comfortable (even wide feet, flat shoes and trainers), so I just bit the bullet. Still nervous as to the final outcome.but I will let you all know. I can even post a 'before and after' when they have unwrapped.my foot if you want !!

None of yours are a bad as mine. I would love them done, they are a bit achey but mostly for how shoes fit and how awful they look.

My mum had bunions, I think mine are hereditary.

I was non weight bearing and on crutches for two weeks. It was quite painful and annoying putting the boot on at night to go to the loo. It was six weeks recovery in total but I am a teacher so I had it done in the summer holidays. I did go back to school in a boot but to be honest once at that stage it was just annoying not painful. They do go numb sometimes and purple in the shower but that is normal. Also very dry skin along the incision.

It makes such a difference though to be able to fit into my shoes and boots and have no pain. I am lucky because my Nan apparently had hers operated on four times and ended up in slippers with no bone in her big toes. Things have improved so much.

Bamboozles · 09/02/2023 18:47

All you people in your 40s and 50s please get them done. I had mine assessed at the hospital when I was about 50 or so and decided to leave it as couldn't take the time off work (self-employed). Now aged 65 my second toe has completely lifted and I struggle with shoes and my feet are 'old ladies' and very painful 😞

cptartapp · 09/02/2023 18:50

I have 'tailor's bunions' so on the outside of both feet next to the little toes.Caused by forcing wide feet into pointed toe shoes in the 80's, according to my mother.
They're not painful these days now I wear more comfortable footwear. Still unsightly.

Zephirine · 09/02/2023 18:55

I've also got a tailor's bunion, very painful and limiting as to what shoes to wear but also walking. I was referred to a podiatrist and waited 6 week for an appointment. I've now been referred to see a surgeon. I'm in my mid sixties and is a relatively recent thing. There is a great American website called Barking Dogs the recommends shoes for all sorts of foot conditions, including bunions. Quite a lot of the shoes are available over here, or similar styles are.

You might find this blog useful beyondbunions.blogspot.com/?m=1

It follows the whole process of surgery

EnglishRain · 09/02/2023 19:10

Please can you all share what problems you have thanks to the bunions? I've had them since a child too. I'm not sure if I'm just used to certain pain because I've always had it.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 09/02/2023 19:14

My gran has absolutely horrendous bunions.
She hobbles around, wobbly and uneven on her feet. They are painful. It's very unsafe.

If mine go like hers I'm 100% getting then fixed.

F4chrissakes · 09/02/2023 19:18

I have, and always have had bunions. They're none too handsome, but have never caused any pain. I met three people who had surgery. The first was when I was in hospital for something else, and she was in so much pain post surgery she kept hollering for more morphine. The second was a neighbour who had them operated on one at a time, and she was well and truly out of action for a good 3 months for each foot. The third was a young very sporty woman with very bad bunions. She had one operated on and wore a surgical boot for ages. When I asked how it was going, she said that a bone had died, there was nothing that could be done, there was limited movement in the toe, couldn't raise the heel that side at all, she was doomed to wear surgical shoes forever, and she wished she'd never interfered with it, and was most certainly not having the other side done.
That quite put me off, and since mine have never hurt, I think I'll just let them be. But I do buy wider fitting old fart shoes. Since I actually am an old fart, this isn't much of a problem to me.
