Hi
I was diagnosed with a underactive thyroid in November.
I have now been on thyroxine for 10 weeks.
My TSH is now down to 6.6. Since starting the thyroxine I have not felt any better at all.

I still feel tired all of the time and I generally feel quite odd at times but cannot really explain how.

I also feel as though I get heart palpitaions from time to time and I feel woozy in the head alot. I also feel as if my heart starts to race if I try and exert myself and I have to sit down I have also had this when just resting.
Can anybody else share their symptoms of a underactive thyroid did you get any of the feelings I have described.

i get those symptoms if undercontrolled. forget tablets occasionally. 6.6 is still quite high, between 0.3 and 4.5 (correct me if wrong) is normal.

You need to go back to your GP I think.

There are several mumsnetters who have this condition, look out for Suzywong amongst others.

My mum has/had Hashimoto's disease, I have some idea how awful it can make you feel. Best wishes.

And take your tablets everyday emandjules!!!!

It can take a long time to get the dose correct.

See the GP, tell him/her that you are still having symptoms and ask whether you need to be taking more thyroxine. They may be trying to take things slowly because increasing the dose too quickly can cause symptoms of over-active thyroid.

hi crazedupmom i was diagnose with an underactive thyroid about 4 months ago and i have had some of the symptoms you have described. i asked my GP and he said heart palpatations were a side effect of thyroxine and may be due to the level that you are prescribed. i am only on 50mg and he said that could be a tiny bit too high but wasnt able to adjust it as 25mg is too small a dose iyswim you should go and see your GP and ask them to check your levels with the view of adjusting your dose HTH

MrsEi25 - I don't see why 25 mcg would be too small a dose, they do tablets that size

crazedupmom - I think you should go back to your GP

MrsEi25 · 07/02/2008 20:58

he said that the tablets come in 25mg, 50mg and upwards but he thought 25mg would be too small a dose for me and i might benefit from a slight decrease like say of 5-10mg they dont make tabs in that small of a dose iyswim (sorry i didnt explain myself too well there )

Palpitations are usually caused by too much throxine, go back to your GP - maybe ask to be referred to endocrinologist?

ei I'm surprised he hasn't said alternat 25 one day 50 another, this is common practice for people who need and 'in betwwen' dose.

I'm on 175 but was built up to that slowly, started on 25 for 2 weeks, 50 etc. I was put up to 200 for a while, but after 1 month got heart palpitations and felt odd, so came back down.

MrsEi25 · 07/02/2008 21:14

he suggested i go to 50mg straight away for some reason but since my body has adjusted i havent been too bad on these so hopefully he wont need to alternate but i will suggest it if it happens again. thanx (sorry for the lil hijack!!)

Hi crazedupmom - I think others have said similar things already but 10 weeks is quite a short time so don't expect miracles yet! You may have had an underactive thyroid for some time before diagnosis so it could take a while for your body to adjust to the thyroxine. I have been on thyroxine for three years and feel great now. It really took a while until I felt better though, or should I say, I had occasional days of feeling better here and there and noticed that symptoms I hadn't even realised were connected to my underactive thyroid gradually disappeared. At first my TSH jumped around all over the place but in time, things settled and everything feels much more stable. Good luck.
