is DS tongue tied?

my DS2 is 9 wks and i have just noticed that the little bit of skin that joins the underside of his tongue with the bottom of the mouth is really close to the front of his tongue. Does this mean he is tongue tied? He BF's very well however he does seem to have a bit of trouble with bottles (EBM).

Thanks

sounds like a partial tongue tie, you can request it be snipped as he problems feeding, a bf counsellor would be able to check if it is partial tongue tie or not for you.

You should get it checked out although if he is feeding well then this would not really have an impact on bottles I dont think. My dd1 had a tongue tie (still does) and she could not latch on but could feed from a bottle.

my dd had partial TT and was quite happy with the quantity of milk she got from me was thriving away, I was in agony though! She couldn't drink from a bottle properly though. A friends' soon had no problems bf but when she weaned him she couldn't get a spoon in his mouth as his tongue kept pushing it forward!

You can stretch it by sticking your tongue out at your ds he will copy and that is a good exercise for them to practice.

SOunds like it yes. Also, does his tongue look a little heart shaped? My ds now 20 weeks was tt - I remember noticing that his tongue at birth looked a bit forked like a lizrd but didn't think anything of it. The midwives pointed it out at his 24 hour check. He latche don and bf fine but we decided to get it snipped just in case as it can cause speech problems later on apparently. It was done at 3 weeks, no drama. They were amazed that he had been bf so well as it was 90% tt apparently. If you are going to snip it I think it is better to do asap as once they get over a certain age they would need an anaesthetic and find it more traumatic. My ds didn't even cry really at 3 weeks.

thanks all, i'll get it checked out at clinic on Monday.

Barbamama - yes his tongue does look forked.

If it is the case then i think i'd rather get it snipped as i would worry about problems later down the line ie speech.
