What is this period-like pain?

In my 40s, not pregnant, a bit peri-menopausal. Not on pill or coil or hormones.

So, I've been having a pelvic pain almost constantly for over a month now. It's mainly felt in my very lower back. Basically my bum. The same level as the base of my spine, but either side and often running round to the front, just like period pain. It also goes down my inner and outer thighs. It's a deep ache. It gets better and worse, but never completely goes.

As I say, I've had it for over a month, throughout all stages of my cycle. It's not linked to my period at all.

Over the last week or so it's progressively getting worse, to the point that I'm now struggling to walk or get up the stairs. It feels like if I were to straighten up/bend backwards then I would rip something inside.

What could it be? It's the fact that it's been so long and it's getting worse that's worrying me.

What does your doctor think it might be?

Mydogatemypurse · 05/02/2023 13:54

Sounds like Endometriosis, i have it and feel like this.
How is going to the loo? Could it be issues with that more. Although my endo is also on my bowel so it can cause this.

RedCarsGoFaster · 05/02/2023 14:01

Kidney stones? My pain can be like that, but the pain of apparently passing one (we never saw it so its assumed I did!) is the worst thing I've ever experienced.

Fenella123 · 05/02/2023 14:09

Fucking hell, GO AND SEE A DOCTOR.
Friend's wife was fobbed off with "back pain" for ages until she was in so much agony she had to be admitted. It had spread so much by then they could do nothing, she died a few weeks later over the Christmas period.
Look, it could be a kidney infection or all sorts of things.
But.
It came on suddenly
It's got much worse over a month
It's now so painful you can't move around normally
This really does need looking at asap.

Hope they sort you soon and it's properly treatable OP, but please, find your inner donkey here and plant yourself in front of doctors until they have investigated and treated this to YOUR satisfaction. Make. That. Fuss. Even if it's hugely out of character.

Going to the loo is...mixed. Have had some diarroeah recently, but I've put that down to anxiety (I am waiting for news on something). Could be IBS or something, I guess. There are so many organs down there.

I was investigated for endo and was clear but that was over a decade ago (turned out the issues then were actually a bleedy cervix, that got cauterised and has been fine since).

@RedCarsGoFaster Would kidney pain be higher up though? More waist area?

@Fenella123 Thanks. Sorry to hear about your friend's wife. I feel like there are so many things it could be. IBS? Fibroids? Cyst? Kidneys? Worse? I was just wondering if anyone had experienced similar.

@gingergingerginger

It doesn't sound like kidney pain. Definitely sounds like it needs to be addressed swiftly by the doctor.

I wouldn't take being fobbed off OP. Especially since it's a telephone appointment. Please don't let them dismiss your symptoms.

QuestionableMouse · 05/02/2023 14:35

I don't think a phone appointment next week is suitable for this sort of pain. Give 111 a ring and see if you can get in to see a Ooh GP today.

Any pins and needles in your groin?

This. The increasing severity and lack of known reason is worrying. And "persistent pelvis and abdominal pain", "back pain" can be symptoms of ovarian cancer (among other things). If you were my sister I would urge you not to delay because the potential downside is as bad as it can be.

gingergingerginger · 05/02/2023 16:22

Thank you. No, no pins and needles in my groin.

Did you manage to get seen?

gamerchick · 06/02/2023 22:22

PID? I'd personally go to a GUM clinic, it's their area and likely to be quicker than the GP.

TitoMojito · 06/02/2023 22:28

I had severe pelvic pain that got to the point I couldn't walk - it was ovarian cysts. But I don't think you should mess about when it comes to the pelvic area. So many things that can go wrong with varying degrees of severity. I'd be looking to get a scan done.

gingergingerginger · 07/02/2023 12:45

Thank you so much everyone. I'm currently waiting for a GP to call me. I'll be pushing for a referral to at least get a scan hopefully.
