I've just had one this morning, is it normal for it to hurt and to bleed afterwards. Am a bit worried. Am hoping its just because the nurse was a bit 'matter of fact' iyswim

yes it can hurt and bleed a little.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/02/2008 13:36

I think it can cause a tiny bit of bleeding sometimes, and I certainly felt a bit uncomfortable during and after mine..depends how much bleeding or pain you have though...

maviscrewit · 07/02/2008 13:37

I had mine last week and the nurse told me to expect a bit of spotting.

smears if done properly shouldnt hurt although they may be uncomfortable, bleeding afterwards is normal

in my limited experience of smears and colposcopies, it depends on whos doing it and how they are going it. didnt realise till last smear that there are two methods. the old one (that really hurt) was a wooden "spatula" that scraped your cervix. this is aparently still being done by practice nurses. the newer method is what looks like a long cotton bud stick with a brush-like head that brushes your cervix. when my gp did it with the "brush" it wasnt what i would love to have done every afternoon but it certainly wasnt painful. hth

THanks - it did hurt and felt like the nurse was doing a lot of scraping and the spatula was covered in blood. Its not hurting now, I think she was jsut a bit rough. Thanks all.

Hi, I went to a talk yesterday given by a consuCtant Gynaaecologist and he was saying that the new method is easier to 'read' the sample as well. It was quite an intersting talk too.

Apologies for my terrible typing, it's been a long day!
