Hi,

My catheter I’ve had a while is giving me gipp and feels painful, it has unsettled me at various times today, woke me up at 2:30 early hours of the morning where it just feels unbareable. I’ve also had loose stools and pulsating backside. I don’t know if I’ll get stomach pain as have numb stomach issue. The nurse doesn’t think there is an infection but has sent of a urine sample, saying if positive I’ll be given antibiotics.

I just don’t want to take antibiotics, as I now associate it with the numb tummy coming on so is there any alternative? Other then praying test is negative.

Not really, no. I have long term bladder issues and take daily life long antibiotics which I increase for infections. If you don’t take them the infection could progress and you could actually end up with either nasty kidney infection or potentially even sepsis. You can however take a daily probiotic to counter some of the side effects of the antibiotics. I take Biokault daily and I find it really helps with my stomach issues.

No. You can not take them and wait for your body to get rid. Might be some damage done though.

the invention of antibiotics is why people don't generally die from illnesses caused by bacterial infection these days. thank heavens. some infections are mild enough that the body's natural defenses can deal with them but if you are already poorly it's not very sensible to rely on that. if the infection is left untreated it is more likely to just get worse and worse rather than spontaneously getting better. yes the side effects are unpleasant. talk to the prescribing practitioner about your concerns. they may be able to help minimise the unpleasantness.

Thank you again. Yes I’m just being stupid, with any luck it’s my bladder fighting the catheter now. I know at my last smear 4 years ago the nurse commented how I had a really really strong pelvic floor.

I understood you could not get a UTI if you had a catheter as that is one of the reasons why they can get put in.

I just resonate antibiotics with the bringing on a numb tummy, which I’m living with until god knows when, perhaps just unfortunate.
