Athletes Foot and Fungal Nail Infection

About 18 months ago I accidentally kicked the foot of my bed and 4 nails on my foot have turned black and gone extremely thick.

It's also turned into athletes foot and my foot is extremely itchy.

I went to a chiropodist and they told me that over the counter treatments aren't much good and to go to the doctor for an oral antifungal treatment. I can't remember what it was called but began with a "T".

The doctor won't give it to me and I'm stuck with these problems.

What can I do to get rid?

I used neat pure tea tree oil on fungal big toe nail. Athletes foot just over the counter stuff, kept clean feet, dried them well and changed shoes frequently.

Neat tea tree oil applied directly to the nails & nail beds on a daily basis is good for fungal nail infections...as a mental health team we used to share an office with podiatrists & we picked up some good tips ! 😀

@BarrelOfOtters @Bedlamjulie Thank you both!

I'll try that and see what happens. Is there a particular over the counter treatment you'd recommend for the athlete's foot?

I'd just ask the pharmacist what they suggest.Wash & dry feet really well x 2 daily ( use the hairdryer to get them really dry ) ,flip flops in the house to get air to your toes.Clean socks daily & rotate your shoes.Superdrug used to sell a spray similar to the stuff that's used at bowling alleys to disinfect shoes ...it might be worth giving that a go.Good luck xxx

Push the GP to do a test for the fungus in your nail. Then they should be able to prescribe a stronger nail lacquer targeting that fungus.
The oral stuff has nasty kidney side effects so I'm persevering with the prescription lacquer for another 6 months.

My dh has the oral Terbinafine for fungal nail treatment. He has to have blood tests every so often to check his liver is not being affected by the tablets

He has taken them before with no issues

I’ve used emitrix before and it cleared it up. Put on straight after your shower whilst the nails are still damp, and then I’d do a final dry with a hairdryer before I put socks on.
For athletes foot, try lamsil once (you can often get it in offer at boots).

I’d persevere with these for a bit before going back to the dr. As pp said, side effects of anti fungals can be pretty bad!

I've tried everything over the years for fungal nails and I can tell you now I spent so much money on nail treatments from the chemist that never worked
Tried tea tree oil neat on nails and also tried a few drops in a basin of warm water to soak my feet..didn't work for me
What has worked though is simply ...Vicks!!!
It's worked like magic for me I put it on the nails affected just a couple of times a week

OH had a bottle of TCP on the side of the bath and put it on religiously every night after his shower. It worked. I believe Vick vaporub works too. His doctor wasn't keen on the oral route either. I also washed his shoes regularly or used a spray to disinfect them. Patience and diligence is crucial

Iodine works as a topical treatment. You can buy clear iodine so it won't stain anything.
