Anyone had a hernia op with or without mesh?

Hi all,
I am due to have an operation on my inguinal hernia with mesh and after reading into this I am concerned about the use of mesh. I see problems have been mostly with the vaginal mesh but I am also hearing stories about both men and women being left in chronic pain after hernia mesh was used.
Has anyone had any experience of a hernia op, what method was it and did you recover ok?
Thanks in advance!

I had a repair with mesh for an umbilical hernia. Not very impressed. The repair itself seems ok but over the first couple of years the mesh pinged away from its moorings (well, actually I’ve no idea quite if and how it was fixed) and I could feel two of its corners through my skin. Then it seems to have rolled up into a teeny tube, so at least it isn’t poking me any more.

I had a mesh for an inguinal and femoral hernia repair with open surgery rather than keyhole.
I can sense the mesh in my pubic area, I've developed ibs type symptoms such as bloating, cramping and diahorea. I have other issues that may or may not be linked too.
There's a Facebook group called Sling the Mesh which will tell you more.

I have an A4 sized piece of mesh in my abdomen and have had no problems.

Wow! That’s good it doesn’t cause you any issues.
May I ask why they used a large piece is it because you had multiple hernias?

I have another inguinal and femoral hernia on the other side and was told I could have a piece across my abdomen but I’m doing the watch and wait approach for that side.

Thank you for your message. Must be a strange sensation. Sorry to hear you have those IBS symptoms .

I had an operation with mesh in my early twenties. Still going strong twenty years later and through three pregnancies with no problems whatsoever.

It’s bad that it has escaped and rolled up. What will you do with it?! Get it removed?

I had an umbilical hernia just stitched and an inguinal repaired with mesh. There was a time I could feel the mesh and I was panicking, but that's gone now. The stitches on my belly button were left too long though, I can feel the thread and it can hurt if I touch it from the wrong angle. Both got repaired about 10 years ago.
