Does anyone know where I can get adult food allergy testing near London? Also how much it will cost roughly? Thanks

I saw Prof Stephen Till here:

www.allergylondon.com

He was absolutely brilliant. Initial consult was around £400 IIRC.

Wow so expensive! Does that include the actual testing or is that just for the meeting? Thanks

I'd already had bloods done separately (it's a very long story!) but no, I think that might be extra. The whole point of having a thorough clinical assessment is so they know what to test for.

Do you want to explain what's going on? What makes you think it's an allergy and what have you done already (eg exclusion diet)? What sort of reactions are you having? What has your GP done?

My mouth swells up in lumps, and my mouth lips and chest get itchy when I eat certain fruits and nuts. The problem started when I was around 20, so for 20 years I ate these items with no issues. My husband can’t kiss me if he’s eaten any of these items as my lips start stinging. I’ve never had anaphylaxis but I would like to understand how serious the allergy is. I’ve never been to the GP about it as I thought they wouldn’t help with allergies. I just guessed that you had to pay privately.

My youngest dd (16) has just developed a similar allergy. My oldest has a peanut allergy.

Anyway, you can develop an allergy at any time. My dd had an over the phone GP appointment and was referred to the allergy clinic about three months ago and has an appointment in March at the hospital.

She will probably have a skin pick test. In the meantime she is keeping a food diary has to carry liquid antihistamine everywhere she goes. And you should too.

I think it it might be a pollen allergy as she reacted to some honey and that would tie in with the fruit but I'm just guessing.

This is what also worries me is that I don’t eliminate allergens when I’m eating out or family are cooking for me. If I physically see that something has nuts I will not eat it. But it could unknowingly be inside some food given to me. I suppose because I’ve never had anaphylaxis before I’m not worried but that’s not a good way to rule it out I suppose. I should probably start telling people I’m allergic and take it seriously enough otherwise it might happen to me. I feel like I need it confirmed otherwise people won’t take me seriously (inlaws and family mainly)

Do you have hayfever by any chance?

Prickmeplease · 28/01/2023 19:02

Yes I do have and have suffered since I was around 11 and I have a cat allergy.

Your GP should be your first port of call. I went private as I wasn't taken seriously and needed a diagnosis asap. My condition is weird and not common, but it is very serious/anaphylaxis. Take pics of any reactions to show GP (or anyone you get referred to).

Aah, have a Google for oral allergy syndrome, also called pollen food syndrome. My son has it and what you describe sounds a lot like it. If it is that then it's fairly easy to manage and rarely escalates.

Prickmeplease · 28/01/2023 19:06

Yes I do suspect oral allergy to raw nuts and fruits. I physically throw up if I eat certain fruit as well. I can drink the juice as it is heated up prior to being sold as juice. I am not sure what the process is called, but it seems to be just raw fruit is an issue, apple juice is fine funnily enough.

It's all explained in those links.

I wouldn't go private for that, personally.

@Yarnosaura thanks for the information I have saved the website to my phone 🤞
