My hearing is awful and I’m only 32

Hearing issues run in my family, both my parents (early 60s) have hearing aids. I’ve had tinnitus my whole life; I didn’t actually realise it wasn’t normal to have a constant high pitched ringing in your ears until recently. Or a whooshy sound that I called “cloud ears” when I was a kid. I’ve been for a hearing test at Specsavers and the very kind person there said I need a referral to an audiologist and mentioned hearing aids. I’m 32, I can’t believe it. I walked out in a state shock.

I struggle to hear my colleagues at work and find myself lip reading more and more. Weirdly the tv always seems really loud to me though, I’m forever asking my kids to turn it down even when it’s on a low volume.

Im just waffling now but has anyone else been in this position? I’m a bit scared.

I feel you OP. I was born with tinnitus and it can be really awful. I know I've lost a lot of my hearing but I haven't been for an actual hearing test. I don't know whether to take the plunge or not! Did you have to pay for it being 32? 💐

Aw I am sorry OP - I can understand your worries. I lost a huge chunk of hearing when I was in my early thirties and it did come as a massive shock. This was ten years ago and its taken a lot of adjusting to but now I am comfortable with wearing my hearing aids and really miss them when I take them out at night.

Did they say anything more about your hearing loss? A referral to ENT is exactly right for you. So they can investigate the causes and make sure you get to see an audiologist and are fitted with suitable hearing aids.
There is a long running thread about hearing loss and aids somewhere on Mumsnet. I will see if I can link to it for you.

I would also recommend you look at the RNID website and google lip reading courses to see if there are any in your area. Finding other people will help you digest this new information.
