Blood pressure - increased dose of ramipril but side effects kicked in

I've been on 2.5mg ramipril for 6 years. I can't remember having any side effects when started but can't completely remember. Other than cough has all been fine.
BP has been increasing so told to increase dose to 5mg. Did that yesterday and have had dizziness / headache / very tired. Felt that I can't turn my head etc.
I normally do an exercise class on Monday evening but didn't feel up to it.
Does anyone know if this is likely to wear off after a few days ?
Thanks

That's interesting @Crikeyalmighty
I've been on the increased dose for a week now and BP hasn't actually reduced significantly. (Not sure if it does take a while to properly kick in - will mention to nurse when have check up.)
Going to try dietary things too.

@historicalnews my Bp took 2 months to drop much!! I think initially it wasn't helped by the fact that the Bptablets combined with the statins gave me such nasty neurological side effects that I was in a state of anxiety - I'm on a low dose of the beta blocker because even with that my heart rate drops below 50 a fair bit(can see on my Apple Watch) on average now BP is around 138/70 - still slightly high but when ut was185/105 it was giving me dreadful headaches

Crikeyalmighty · 28/01/2023 18:12

@historicalnews - the ace inhibitors (which Ramipril is one of) made me feel like I was having weird brain zaps that felt like I was going to faint-I only get this with the beta blocker if I'm pretty tired, so occasionally late at night- ace inhibitors are actually newer and more advised I know

historicalnews · 28/01/2023 23:35

@Crikeyalmighty 138/70 is pretty good so hopefully you feel well with that

Yep , I'm happy with 138/70 -actually had it today at 119/62 and 128/68 .

@historicalnews just to add, you could ask to try another similar ACE inhibitor. DH had similar reactions to you when he took lisinopril – to make matters worse they felt exactly like hypos (he has Type I diabetes). But he was switched to enalipril and has not had the same issues. Been on it for 20+ years now, no side effects at all.

Thanks @thing47

I had to have mine changed last year, after being on 2.5mg for well over 10 years. I found the 5mg in one dose made me feel horrific, so the GP split the dose and I take 2.5mg in the morning and 2.5mg at bedtime, works so much better. They also added in 5mg of Amlodopine in the morning as it didn't bring my BP down enough (type 2 diabetic). My BP has stablilised well.

historicalnews · 30/01/2023 19:53

Useful to know about the split doses

@Badger1970 how long did you give it on the 5mg before splitting it and what kind of side effects were you getting.
I'm on day 12 now. Side effects actually improved for a few days and I thought that was that - but unfortunately the light headedness / dizziness etc started again yesterday.
I'm really hoping will settle again although but concerned that it won't now that it's come back.

The day after I started taking Ramipril I was exhausted - had to drag myself up stairs with the banisters feeling about 90 years old. That passed but the cough carried on for a bit. Second everyone who says take them at night.

On 1.25 mg and 10mg Amlopidine (which I take in the morning).

Thank you. As the side effects had really improved I was hoping that would be the end of it but possibly just being too impatient.

I tolerated it for about 3 weeks before having had enough. I felt dizzy every time I stood up, could feel my pulse roaring in my ears and generally felt horrible on it. I saw a different GP who suggested splitting the dose and that took all the symptoms away within 2 days.

historicalnews · 02/02/2023 19:22

That's really useful @Badger1970 - thanks
