Weight Loss in Pregancy - 5 stone and Counting .... help

Hi All

Sorry I have not posted for a while and hope that everyone had a good Xmas and New year.

Well Thing here have been a little strange I am now 32weeks (ISH) and counting.

I was over weight when I got pg. But I have not changed my diet or done anything different since. No change in portion size, no cravings for anything strange. I have nto stopped eating anything.

But I have lost 5stone and I am still going! Baby is fine and totally heathy according to the scans test etc. Baby appears to be a little on the large size. But that is to be expected with our family history.

So here is the question I have battled my whole life with my weight. I have been tested for thyroid numerous times. My diet is perfect even according to a nutritionist it is not possible for me to weight what I do with what I eat.

So have I just been really lucky or this hormonal? I've never had any tests on my hormone balances.... Please help!!

5 Stone !
May i ask what you weighed at the start and then now ?

Beauregard · 06/02/2008 12:32

I used to work with a girl that lost weight when pregnant, was about 2 stone she lost.

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/02/2008 12:36

Wow! Is this your first pregnancy?

StaryNightSky · 06/02/2008 12:38

Yeap First Preganancy.

It is really odd. I was wondering if it could be a hormone imbalance? Something that would be a lot higher during pregancny?

I lost weight when I was pg. Same as you - no change in diet or anything.

All I can suggest is retesting your thyroid as gps are often using out of date reference values. Also, get your blood sugar tested.

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/02/2008 12:53

Well it certainly doesn't sound normal. I would definitely speak to your doctor about it now, so that they can test levels of whatever might be relevant whilst you are still pg.

Ok so your bmi was raised at beginning of pregnancy which means you should be attending a consultant clinic for extra checks.
This will include extra scans, weight measurements for you and baby and blood tests which will routinely test you glucose levels because that is the usual protocol for ladies with a raised BMI.
At this clinic your weight loss which i must say is alarming will have been noted and recorded in your notes.
What did the obstrician say ?
What were his or her thoughts on your weight loss ?
If you have lost 5 stone surely you have at least been referred by your midwife to an obstrician for his or her opinion ?
I would also want a medical opinion ?
5 stone is an abnormal amount of weight loss and as such you should have a consultation with the obs, but i really would have thought you already had this.
Are they worried ?

sounds suspiciously like gestational diabetes - I lost some weight while pregnant and was tested for this. It can also cause the baby to be big.

StaryNightSky · 06/02/2008 16:05

Hi All

Ok, BMI was raised and I have numerous other medical problems. Not Consultant, No Midwife. Did have a 20 week scan and triple test, that was that! All that was on offer in the area I lived. I am now living with my parents in SPAIN. Excellent Gynocologist, he's German. He's not conerned, but my medical history is so complicated that there is so much else to worry about.

Not Diabetic. We have a familey history of type 1 and type 2 so I check my blood levels everyweek. I'm perfect as always.

Baby is not that big, but will certainly be on the large size of normal. But not big enought to be the cause of any concern, but is certainly receiving all the nutrients and vitamins it needs.

Was worth a shot, but clealry you are all as puzzled as I am.

Please let me know what happens after the birth Stary. Seek me out to point me in the direction of a thread!

StaryNightSky · 07/02/2008 10:17

Thanks CantSleep

I'm really confused by it all. Can't help think that it is hormonal will have to wait and see. All though as I am hoping to bf or atleast combine feed. I'm not sure I will now anything for a while.

Really strange through.

Ok i dont understand some of this.

You say no consultant and no midwife and that this was because they were unavailable in the area.
Why and where in the EU has no obstetric or midwife service ?
You say you had a 20 week scan so there must be facilities - what you say just doesdnt make sense to me .
Next you say baby is big but not that big - what is this statement based on - only ultrasounds scans in the last trimester can estimate weight and you haven`t had a scan since 20 weeks ?

Then you say your in Spain and have a german Gynocologist ?
Spain is part of the EU and as such you have access to an obstrician and a midwife .
Next you say you check your blood levels for glucose every week but as usual they are perfect because you are not diabetic - so how and why are you having weekly blood tests for this ?
Sorry but i would be concerned because 5 stone is a lot of weight and any obstrician that i have worked with would agree and refer you and be regularly scanning your baby at least. If your not having additional care and they are not concerned are you absolutely sure you lost 5 stone ?

StaryNightSky · 07/02/2008 16:32

Ok, look I will make this really simple.

I am terribly sorry if things work differently where you work.

I went to the GP when I found out I was PG. I was refered to the Community midwife who was on holiday. Unfortuntely the community midwife never came back from holiday and there is a shortage of midwifes in the area I lived in.

I was then refered to the hospital near where I lived in the uk to see a consultant obgyn. But they don't offer appointments untill after you are 20 weeks.

We have a familey history of diabetes and I have seen first hand what can happen if diabets is diagnosed late and as such the WHOLE familey check their bloood levels weekly, and blood pressure weekly to be on the safe side. Surely that is a good thing?

I moved to spain after my 20 week scan, where my parents live is very spainish and there is no english spoken at the local hospital so we have found a private clinic which is excellent but the Gynocologist happens to be German. I have had another scan at my first appointment with him. Baby is on the large size of normal and growing well and totally healthy. Sorry if your hospital is different I am very pleased to hear it but where I lived the level of service was terrible.

Yes I am certain I have lost over five stone I can do simple maths. Its easy take the weight I was when I found out I was preganant the weight I am now is 5 stone less.

I really do hope that the rest the women on mumsnet recieved better care than I did. But my experience of pregancy services from the NHS was terrible. Hence why I asked the question on here!

Oh Sorry forgot to mention.

I am now being seen evey 2 - 3 weeks by the Gynocologist and here they do scan routinely at every appointment.

He was horrified at the standard of care I had recieved, to date. Particularly as I he would have classified me as high risk given my medical history!
