Lump in back of throat hurts to swallow after infection

I’ve had an infection in my throat for 2 weeks. I was prescribed a 10 day course of Penicillin which I will be finishing tomorrow. They don’t do a swab on adults but the doctor said it was strep throat. The white stuff and swelling of the tonsils went down a good few days ago. For the last few days I’ve had a pain in the back of the roof of my mouth, kind of near the tonsils but the tonsils sit behind the area. There is a lump, it hurts to swallow on this side. The GP is closed and I am worrying that I’m developing a quinsy or an abscess. What would you guys do, just wait until it gets worse then go to the walk in centre? I doubt they would drain it at this stage. I’ve taken a photo and the part of my mouth is red, but can’t physically see a lump yet but can feel it with my tongue. How did this develop whilst taking antibiotics for the last 9 days??? I really can’t afford to have anymore time off work, I’m expected to return on Monday morning.

Could have developed into a quinsy, if that’s the case you will have great difficulty in swallowing, even saliva. If you think you have a quinsy you will have an urgent medical need, I was sent into hospital and had the quinsy drained and iv antibiotics, stayed in overnight and was placed on emergency list for tonsillectomy, as this had been a second occurrence of quinsy. Good luck OP, I hope it isn’t a quinsy & you feel better soon.

Oh god that’s scaring me, I hope it doesn’t turn into that. It’s red at the moment I can’t see anything white in the lump. It’s on the roof of my mouth but right at the back.

I’m just thinking… if it was a normal abscess then surely the antibiotics I was on would have stopped it. Can a quinsy start a few days after the tonsillitis or strep has gone? Does anyone know if it could be a wisdom tooth sticking out? the dentist said that mine sit to the side but it’s normal apparently.

@Paininthemouth how is your throat feeling today? Both times I had quinsy it happened quite suddenly and got worse very quickly. 🤞you are feeling a bit better. If not call 111. Good luck.

It is more painful and both sides hurt now (left side more and the lump is on the left side). I’ve got no idea what’s going on as I’ve had this pain for 2 weeks. The lump only appeared a few days ago. Antibiotics are about to run out, I fear the lump and swelling will get worse once they are out of my system. Do you think it’s worth phoning 111? Or shall I wait until the GP opens tomorrow for a consultation?

Throat is hurting now both sides plus the side with the lump. Can see some white stuff in the tonsils but it’s not very painful (I can still eat). I did a 111 online consultation as I wanted to see if I needed more antibiotics or maybe different ones as it’s been 2 weeks now I’ve had “strep” the nurse who phoned me back said I have to wait until tomorrow to speak to my GP as they are busy, without even asking me what’s wrong. I explained the situation and that I’ve had this for 2 weeks, it’s getting worse and I’m about to run out of Penicillin unfortunately on a Sunday. She said

“Like I said were busy, so you need to speak to your GP tomorrow”

Absolutely no sympathy at all, she didn’t even ask me any questions, the 111 form asks you generic questions so I didn’t get a chance to give her the full history or explain about the lump that has appeared. Lets hope it doesn’t get worse but thankfully my GP will be able to help me tomorrow as long as I can actually get an appointment. Fingers crossed 🤞

It makes me upset because I work for the NHS… so I understand the pressures they are under but I would never speak to a patient in that tone. If this is an abscess forming then I will end up at the walk in centre later on anyway, even next week the GP won’t be able to do anything if it gets that bad. I think prevention is the key, but clearly they just want to fob you off then it gets so bad that you end up in hospital. Clearly the Penicillin isn’t working but I have a hunch that it is keeping it at bay, although not getting rid of the infection.
