My cheeks turn bright red when I am warm, stressed, or drinking beer/wine. They never used to before.

....at least, they didn't until about 3 years ago. I didn't understand why drinking a cup of tea would make my cheeks glow bright red (and feel horribly hot), and fretted about it. It didn't seem to happen much in hot months or Christmas before last, but now it is back with a vengeance. Friends have started asking why on earth I am bright red. It's only my cheeks that are hot, not the rest of me :/

What on earth is this? Has anyone had a similar experience? I am female and 41 years old.

Yes, I find vodka affects me less than wine/beer! A shame as I much prefer the latter but there we are :/

For those who have been through this as part of menopause - how long did it last? I still get regular periods so must only be in peri....

This started for me in peri menopause, just with alcohol.

Everyone is saying what it could be but is there no solution?

User98866 · 22/01/2023 08:06

I’ve started to get this when I drink wine, but only sometimes. I’ve also always had a weird reaction to oranges. Sometime they will make my whole face flush and go sweaty, other times not. I’ve always assumed it’s hormones that affect my reaction to histamines at different times of the month. Maybe Peri menopause?

It's an enzyme deficiency look up Asian flush

I am 12 years post menopause and it has never worn off. I am always reluctant to attribute symptoms to the menopause but this is certainly an age related thing.

It would depend on the cause. Rosacea would have a different treatment than menopause.

Unlikely to be the Asian alcohol thing unless you've had it all your life.

lborgia · 25/01/2023 00:45

There are 3 different kinds of rosacea, so def worth finding out. It's affected by hormones, alcohol, spicy foods, tiredness, citrus fruit, every bloody thing, so get it checked. There are one or two things you can try first, eg azelaic acid, which you can get from one of the "pared down" beauty companies such as The Ordinary. It's exactly the same as the pharmaceutical version, and life changing for some people. - just seen a version at Superdrug reduced to £6-ish.

If you search in the S and B threads, and menopause, I'm sure you'll find more info.

I've read somewhere that micro doses of botox can help with the flushing caused by rosacea. Anyone tried it?
