Was diagnosed this today as well as mild depression! what fun.

Am looking into laser surgery - is this a good idea?

Hi, I have plantar fasciitis but don't know anything about laser surgery I'm afraid.
I gooogled it and found that lots of stretching exercise are good such as writing the alphabet with your big toe ( in the air ) before getting out of bed. Also put your heel on the floor and your toes against the wall at 45 degrees and push into the wall with your back leg. Hard to explain but it gives the foot a good stretch. Don't go barefoot - crocs are good and I believe they do one especially for this condition. The best thing for me has been paying attention to my gait and really thinking about how I walk. Rolling the foot fully rather than plodding has relieved a lot of my pain.
Hope this helps

I've had PF a couple of times. As well as exercises I used supports in my shoes, which you can buy from Boots. It takes a long time to heal, sometimes up to 2yrs. I'm a bit of a wuss so personally wouldn't do the surgery thing unless I was totally unable to walk!

My mum had PF a couple of years ago and had acupuncture. She said that it really helped.

some stuff here re: PF

Yes I have it - the doc said it would be a recurring condition, so I might not have it for a few years then it might come back. Had hydrocortizone ( I have never written that down before as you can see but go with me on this) injection which was agony but it did eventually go away.

The doc said 'don't walk about too much'

I was diagnosed last monday, a result of a running injury. I am fairly fed up about it as I really don't want to give up running. She suggested I visit a podiatrist who can do a biomechanical assesment and make me custom built orthotic insoles - my PF is caused by my feet over-pronating. Stretching out the calfs is also important.

I had this when i was running a lot. Don't start running again as soon as it feels a bit better. i did that and it then came back and was much worse. I had some sort of anti inflammatories that didn't seem to do much. Stopping running did the trick. I used a cross trainer at the gym instead. Haven't had it for years now.

Yes, the physio told me no running for atleast 2 months. I'm not actually in any pain now, occasional discomfort, but I got the injury beginning of December, and kept trying to run on it, so the pain was there for a good 6 weeks. I'm hoping after this 2 month break, I can build up to doing a few miles 3 times a week. I'm not interested in long distance running, I just want to do some regular short distances to maintain my fitness. I hope I will atleast be able to do that.

DiscoFever, the physio gave me a deep tissue massage followed by an ultrasound massage, which really helped. The pain was worse for a couple of days after but has now completely gone. Are you getting any physio for it?

thanks for all the advice. the laser surgery is £25 a shot and the nice man on the phone said yes, you can walk after pretty much immediately. glad its not just me with it. i had heard of it before but always associated it with the older generation.

am going to focus on the stretching and other exercises for a while as i have just had major surgery and cant face anything else at the moment.
