Please help my friend, she is at her wits end. 9 month old with reflux

My friend's DD (9 months) was diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks old. She hoped that after weaning the sickness would settle down but at 9 months old she is still being violently sick up to 6 times a day. She has been to the doctor numerous times just to be told that she has a sicky baby and she will grow out of it. The doctors are unwilling to test her for lactose intollerance as its so rare. Another friend suggested trying soy formula to see if this helped but the doctor has advised that babies shouldn't have soy formula now (think this is very recent advice?) Anyone been through anything similar? Any advice/experiences welcome.

if drs won't test for lactose intolerance why does your friend not just try a lactose free diet to see if it makes a difference.

I suggested this but she is nervous about giving soy formula against her doctors advice

My dd has been on soya formula since 5 months (now 11 months) as the doc thought that she had lactose intolernace. Turns out that she doesn't...well dont thinks so as have weaned her and she has had dairy, wheat etc....have to take her off the soya formula at the end of the month to see how she gets on, but tbh the soya has never had a detrimental effect.

it may be worth a try, better than baby being sick all time, how is babies weight. Dd had reflux til 8 months, not as bad but did grow out of it.

I would have thought soy milk would be banned if it was that bad,

bottleblonde · 05/02/2008 21:27

Thanks, I'll pass that on

Weight is fine, probably why the doctor isn't doing anything except keeping an eye on her weight. Not sure what the issue is with soy

my dd had bad reflux and was spectacularly sick several times a day - I was told it'd get better when she started solids - it didn't - the sick just smelt worse

it eventually started getting better at around 15 months or so and had reached minimal, bearable levels by about 18 months

however it left her with the legacy of being able to be sick at will until she was around 3

her weight was fine all the way through and although every now and then I took her to the dr in despair I was told there was no medical problem and that she would grow out of it - which she did, just took longer than anyone thought

my washing machine died because of it

My ds, now 2.4yo, had reflux, diagnosed when he was only a few weeks old. He had a virus illness (sickness and diorreah (I know that's not spelt right!!) when he was 7 weeks old and had lactose intollerance as a result. I was told then that soya formula wasn't as full of nutrients etc as "normal" formula but to give it to my ds for a month or so and then switch back. My ds did grow out of the reflux when he had been fully weaned for a while, he was about a year old I think. But having said that he couldn't have yoghurts for a long time after that. I was just careful not to give him too much milk products in one day. Fingers crossed your friends dd will grow out of it too.

My dd had this and was sick continuously all day long, sometimes projectile - finally saw paediatrician when she was 7 months and she was prescribed Gaviscon powder - has this been tried? You mix it either with their formula or you can mix it on a spoon with water and give it if breastfeeding. It worked for my dd where nothing else had including soya milk etc. She had it until she was about 13 months, and then we gradually stopped it and she was fine. Her weight was OK but I think she must have been in some pain looking back. I had to cry at the GP to get referral, but paediatrician was great...

dd improved significantly once she cruised and walked properly , so was more upright.

bottleblonde · 05/02/2008 21:45

I know she had gaviscon powder when she was younger. Interesting to hear about walking helping as friend's DD is starting to pull herself up. Thanks all will pass all info on

Hi

There are lots of mums with refluxy babies on www.littlerefluxers.co.uk
Its good to read other peoples experiences and some local support groups are being set up via it.

Basically most Drs wont do anything if the baby is putting on weight and is not in pain/distress etc. It is dreadfully frustrating.

I have tried lots of meds for my LO 8 1/2 months and he is still sicky but is now putting on lots of weight and has no pain whlie feeding.

Weaning has helped a bit but the sick is now different colours and smells v bad.

I was told that if he had a lactose intolerance he would have diarrhoea as well but all the info I have read seems to say different things

twocutedarlings · 06/02/2008 00:52

I dont agree that lactose intolerance is that rare tbh.

If your friend baby is LI and she was to try her on soya milk she would probably see an improvment within a few days. If DF DD is fully weaned and getting a well balanced diet, then i think i would just try her DD on soya for a week or so.
