Osteopathy

Any osteopaths or people familiar with treatment…
I’ve had osteopathy a dozen or so times in the last 20 years, at the same practice, but obvs different therapists.
It used to involve a quick chat with the therapist, a 10-15 minute massage, then manipulation which often involved loud “clicks”. Invariably I left feeling sore but with much better range of movement.
I went this week and it was entirely different. I didn’t undress and there was no massage. The manipulation was very gentle rocking while lying on my side while the therapist felt my spine, with no clicks.
I left feeling much the same as when I went in, though today I am quite tender.
is this just an alternative approach. Do some therapists just not do the clicking part?

@supercatlady i felt horrendous after mine

Movinghouseatlast · 05/01/2025 13:00

It depends what the issue you have is I would imagine. Mine never 'clicks' me but my problem is my hip flexor. She pokes them and pulls my legs.

Deedoo · 05/01/2025 13:15

@Movinghouseatlast i had l5-s1 herniation and nerve compression. Il go to someone else

Deedoo · 05/01/2025 13:16

@Movinghouseatlast i had a horrid horrid fat physio.

Snowmanscarf · 05/01/2025 13:18

It may depend on what treatment you need. I’ve never been ‘clicked’ but have had massaged-type treatment, my legs stretched and rotated etc. I find it beneficial.

Deedoo · 05/01/2025 13:27

@Snowmanscarf mine was my back spine @Snowmanscarf no cracking

Deedoo · 05/01/2025 13:28

@Snowmanscarf did you have back pain

Snowmanscarf · 05/01/2025 13:38

No, uneven pelvis

Deedoo · 05/01/2025 13:38

@Snowmanscarf Where was your pain

Snowmanscarf · 05/01/2025 13:50

It caused me to walk awkwardly rather than in pain.

Deedoo · 05/01/2025 13:57

@Snowmanscarf you had a great physio

JC03745 · 05/01/2025 14:05

I assume its different techniques or different training. I've been to many over the years at different clinics due to moving house, seeing 1 near work, 1 near home etc. My main issues have been a pain in my thoracic spine (middle of my back), 1 time I also had knee pain and plantar fasciitus.

On my back- sometimes they would click it and a massage. Others, used a technique where I pushed against resistance. So each breath out, I'd push slightly harder against their arm or leg, breath in, then when breathing out- push a bit more.

Surely you could just ask/book into to see a certain practitioner?

Deedoo · 05/01/2025 14:28

@JC03745 never going back to him hope he's not caused perm damage

SharonEllis · 05/01/2025 14:34

I would ask them - I ways talk to an osteo about what tney are doing. I've had loads of osteo. Don't remember ever being 'clicked'.

Get a second opinion and report if he has broken professional standards.

Deedoo · 05/01/2025 16:04

@SharonEllis how do I report him?

There will be a complaints procedure on the website. Get a referral through your gp to a different osteo and ask them.

Deedoo · 05/01/2025 16:14

@SharonEllis thank you I will do. So hard to find a trust worthy one
