Raised FBC

Looking for some reassurance on slightly abnormal fbc tests results.....

Had a surgery on my hand last Nov and had full blood count as part of pre-op.

All went well and nobody mentioned the results.

During the follow up appointment I asked the surgeon and he showed me the results- there are slightly raised rbc, wbc, hemoglobin and platelets. They would be in normal generic nhs ranges but not in my hospital range. Eg. Hemoglobin is 450, range 150-400, even though many ranges are still 150-450.

I will make an appointment with my GP but would a preoperative stress, broken hand and the fact that the test was done out of the blue possibly elevate the readings?

Dr Google I not helping....please help :(

Correction - I meant platelets 450, not hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is 160, range (115-250).

Oh gosh, range 115-155. Sorry!

Those results wouldn’t concern me at all (haematology nurse)

Thank you so much! I have been so worried.

Hb at 160 is high but not damaging. Do you smoke? A high Hb compensates for low oxygen levels in smokers

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 18/01/2023 21:49

Try not to worry, the hb is barely out of the high range, do you smoke, eat a lot of red meat or vegetables or take iron supplements?

CaroHere · 18/01/2023 22:14

I don't smoke or eat too much iron in any form.
And why would platelets be high at the same time?
I wonder if that had anything to do with my badly broken hand, would that cause inflammation in the body and raised fbc levels?
Thanks for responding!

No, I don't think it's related to your hand, but high platelets aren't a concern, it's other coagulation factors which relate to clotting.

CaroHere · 19/01/2023 08:20

Thanks again. Will wait for gp appointment.

If you don't mind, I will ask one more question - if my pre operation results were concerning in any way, would they be flagged to my GP? Or I would have been told?
I really think I have health anxiety :(((

Hi @CaroHere hope you are well. Did you get any answers? Currently have similar, but raised haemaglobin (168) and haemacrit (0.48)
in my 30s
never smoked.
was done also as part of a pre op.
