Interpreting Thyroid Function Test Results

Hi,

hoping someone here is clued up on thyroid test results.

I’ve been told they’re abnormal and to have another test in 6 weeks. This would be my 3rd test.

TSH 0.35 (0.35-4.94)
T4 11.1 (9-19.10)
T3 3.8 (2.4-6)

Thanks

Have a look at secondary hypothyroidism, which is generally a pituitary rather than an actual thyroid problem.

More information on ThyroidUK's website.

Oh, and thanks for giving the reference ranges. That makes it easier to see that everything is low in range.

Your T3 and T4 are very low? What did your dr say?

Could start treatment, could wait and retest. I am having an antibody test today. Will hopefully start treatment by the end of the week. Does an antibody test dictate treatment? Thanks

Mine are:
TSH 3.66
T3 4.4
T4 14.2

Told they were all in normal range (as yours appear to be?) but obviously my TSH is a bit higher as yours as only just in the normal range so maybe that's why they've said you need re-test?

At one point my TSH was 16 which is when I started on thyroxine so clearly way way above normal range.

It seems reasonable they would treat for an overactive thyroid with TSH that low (just reading that generally less than 0.4 requires treatment.)

Carrie97 · 17/01/2023 07:35

Antibody will tell you if it’s hashimoto, some woman with thyroid issues need their dose of thyroxine upped during pregnancy so defo keep on top of this, it’s vital for a healthy pregnancy

TheOtherHotstepper · 17/01/2023 09:26

If OP was overactive, low TSH would be paired with above range FT4 and FT3, but in this case everything is low, which is more unusual and caused by issues further back in the feedback loop.

If you're on thyroxine for underactive thyroid, then TSH should be wherever it needs to be to have FT4 and FT3 in the top 25% of the reference range.

ThyroidUK have lots of information.

Thanks everyone
