something else, just to help me over a difficult few days/weeks coming up. This probably sounds a bit pathetic, but in the next couple of months we'll be having a new kitchen and bathroom put in,which will be a big disruption. I find anything like this totally throws me and get very stressed - I have OCD anyway and manage it well without meds, but I fear that the extra anxiety might make it difficult to cope. I just want to feel calm and as relaxed as possible.
I have hypnotherapy cds which I use to calm myself but feel that a bit of a chemical kick might be in order to help me over this. What do you think ? Many thanks in anticipation for advice !

anyone any suggestions ?

OP posts:

Have you taken it before?

I take 5mg when flying, which is twice a year. it works a treat, but is habit forming!

I had a few extra pills left over last year and found myself thinking it would be nice to take one before a stressful xmas shopping sesh, or to cope with other stressful events in life. i didn't take them, cuz i felt it would be a "slippery slope" iykwim.

i think if it's going to help you after you've tried other things, then why not?

The only thing i would suggest is ask doctor for a limited amount of pills ie 20 mgs (4 x 5mg tabs).

thanks jooseyfruit - no,I've never had them before - I just want to take something to help over this short time -would ask for a small amount ! What does it feel like btw ?

Like you've had a few glasses of wine tbh.
It just makes you "care less" about stuff!

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/02/2008 12:46

that's what I was hoping ! thanks !

Good luck over stressful times, and hope you can continue managing OCD successfully.

just think of how fab you will feel if you manage to cope without drugs though...

I use Kalms for stressful events (such as flying which I loathe with a passion) and I find they help

CountessDracula · 05/02/2008 12:51

I would say not

It is a bit like living life behind a glass wall. Nice at the time but ultimately won't help you.

Surely you need to get through these stressful but to be honest everyday things like having your house disrupted to prove to yourself that you can do it?

SorenLorensen · 05/02/2008 12:51

Have you tried Kalms? Or Bach's Rescue Remedy? Obviously not in the same league as Valium but maybe worth a try first?

TheHonEnid · 05/02/2008 12:52

lol marina I always remember you saying that you packed a big bottle of Kalms for holidays and being relieved that I Was Not The Only One

SorenLorensen · 05/02/2008 12:52

X-posted with Marina

marina · 05/02/2008 12:53

I blame Fio, she put me on to them
I'd get the builders on to Pro-Plus MaryAnn and keep feeding them macchiatos, to get them off the premises asap

marina · 05/02/2008 12:54

Enid, my three essentials for a good holiday

Our invincible corkscrew
Kalms
Carbon monoxide monitor

Am then ready for all eventualities

Marina - I've got a carbon monoxide monitor for holidays !
Yes, I have tried Rescue Remedy, which I like, not sure that it works, but find the idea of it comforting ( drank a whole lot of it when we had new boiler fitted) ...and yes, I'd be very pleased with myself if I could get through it without any drugs - I am not keen on feeling 'out of it' and prefer to manage OCD without drugs. I might give Kalms a go though. I tend to worry in adavance about all eventualities and when the thing happens I usually deal with it quite calmly - I think it's more the anticipation and what if scenarios that play in my head.

I am like that

before and after I am hopeless

during I am very copey

CountessDracula · 05/02/2008 14:58

hang on
why do you need kalms on holiday?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 05/02/2008 15:01

Valium does seem a little harsh given the circumstances.
Can you not ask your GP for something that is less addictive? Citalopram is very good.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/02/2008 15:29

wpould that work for a short time then thedevilwears?

OP posts:
TheDevilWearsPrimark · 05/02/2008 15:44

Thats a good point, I know it can take up to a month to start working, then at least a month to gradually reduce dosage safely to stop taking it.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/02/2008 16:47

mm, was looking for a quick fix !

OP posts:
TheDevilWearsPrimark · 05/02/2008 17:09

Kalms may help. I think they can have more of a psychosomatic effect than an actual one, but whatever helps is all good!
