DH needs urgent prescription for UTI

Tulipomania · 14/01/2023 09:25

DH woke up this morning with a UTI. He urgently needs antibiotics. Happy to pay to get a prescription privately - but how?
Our health insurance can't offer a GP consultation until Tuesday.
111 said go to A & E - clearly we don't want to add to the NHS burden for a relatively minor ailment, nor have to wait 12 hours to be seen.
Most online private appointments seem to be linked to health insurance providers.
Anyone got any helpful advice please?

Ooh yes - Boots and Superdrug both give prescriptions for this. It’s about £30, you need to answer some questions online. It’s been a lifesaver for me in the past. Let me find a link.

poorbuthappy · 14/01/2023 09:29

Stupid question. Doesn't your gp offer out of hours?

DeathMetalMum · 14/01/2023 09:29

Push doctor and Babylon health can both be accessed on a one off basis.

Pinkyandtwerky · 14/01/2023 09:30

UTIs in men are actually very unusual and need proper assessment.
The symptoms are more likely due to an STI or a prostate problem.

This is why allowing people access to things like antibiotics without seeing a health professional is a really bad idea.

Get properly checked. You can get a private GP appointment and they can then also send details to his own GP for any ongoing investigations that are required if needs be although by rights once you access the private system you should have all the tests via them.

We already tried Boots but they only offer that for women.

Thanks for the empathy. No, our GP refers you to 111 out of hours, who told DH to go to A&E.

And you say he needs ‘urgent’ antibiotics within two hours of his symptoms starting. We have to reframe urgent need in this country. Rarely is a symptom urgent in two hours unless it’s signs of a stroke or chest pain or can’t breathe.

Metabigot · 14/01/2023 09:32

There are loads of online pharmacies where you just complete a form/ declaration

Push doctor is reputable

Moonriver79 · 14/01/2023 09:32

Sorry to hear this, and as a fellow sufferer I empathise. If you phone your GP there should be a number for an out of hours service that saves you having to go to a&e - I believe some pharmacies now offer antibiotics for uti's (or maybe that's just my area) Failing that it might just be worth going to a&e as male uti's can be a bit more complex than female, sounds like he definitely needs some antibiotics though

LaCerbiatta · 14/01/2023 09:33

UTIs in men are unusual and potentially dangerous, your dh really should see a GP. My dh had a UTI a couple of years ago and it immediately triggered a whole load of tests and exams related to the prostate. If you self medicate and don't see a doctor you may be ignoring or hiding bigger problem.

For the reasons I gave above.

Well you know what to do then

LaCerbiatta · 14/01/2023 09:34

Yes there's a reason it's different for men.

Tulipomania · 14/01/2023 09:36

Not sure why some people are giving me a hard time on here?

I will give PUSH a try.

Obviously it's not urgent in this sense of a heart attack, but he is in pain and if it was a weekday he would easily be able to get a GP appointment.

Google private GP clinics in your nearest large town or city. Most have them and you can usually get seen the same day, appointments tend to be between £50 and £70.

LaCerbiatta · 14/01/2023 09:37

And this idea now of not seeking appropriate medical help because it's really not that urgent and because of the state of the NHS is so so dangerous. Sounds like a trivial issue but A&E or out of hours if there's one is the right place for your dh now.

A and E being for accidents and emergencies.

Would pain on urination for the last two hours constitute either of them? He won’t get seen truthfully unless he is showing signs that he is systemically unwell like very high fever, vomiting etc and even then it will be ages.

Out of hours GP or walk in centre would be ideal but they are overwhelmed hence 111 having no other option than to direct to A&E. However if OP is able to seek private options then private GP would be best surely?

IfOnlyTheyMeantIt · 14/01/2023 09:44

Could you try the sachet powder things for a few hours? See if they help.

What about buying the dip strips that test his urine to find out for sure whether it is an infection? You can definitely buy them from chemists.

Also, I think the PP was referring to their own question being stupid, not yours Smile

madmumofteens · 14/01/2023 09:45

In our area local pharmacies can offer emergency antibiotics maybe worth contacting them to ask?

Stardustkid · 14/01/2023 09:46

Do you have a walk-in centre, they can issue prescription and are usually quicker than a&e

JuneOsborne · 14/01/2023 09:47

How do you know it's a UTI?

Tulipomania · 14/01/2023 09:50

Apologies to @poorbuthappy for misunderstanding
