Impacted wisdom teeth

I am having 3 of my wisdom teeth extracted next week, two of which are impacted and causing me a lot of pain. I am feeling increasingly anxious about it as I have a 3 year old and a 10 month old who still breastfeeds throughout the night.

I will be sedated for the procedure but I'm most worried about the recovery process and how I will manage with the babies. My partner will be taking 3 days off work to help while I recover but I'm unsure if this is enough time. I'm worried that the broken sleep from breastfeeding at night will delay my recovery.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Feeling so nervous.

Are you having it done in hospital? I had 2 out but I was awake which was pretty gross and brutal, albeit interesting. Obviously lots of anaesthetic so no pain. It was better on the first day and then there was a lot of pain for quite a while. I had young children at the time so that was challenging. I lost weight as it was so painful to eat. I do have a very low pain threshold though. This was a good 10 years ago, I was 40.

In terms of breast feeding, I would check what the strongest painkillers you can take are. Also I think I had issues with one of mine healing so do check up how you can go back in four them to look at it if it's not getting better after a week or so. Try not to have hot food or swish things round your mouth as you need the blood 'plug' to stay put. I think if it comes out it can cause infection.

Sorry not to be more positive. It was really difficult for me, but hopefully it will be better for you. It's great your husband is off, mine was not and I was working part time.

Hi OP, I had the same procedure although it was about 15 years ago before I had children so I only had myself to worry about! For me, the pain afterwards wasn't that bad. I felt a bit miserable for the next day (I was expecting to be able to go to work but I couldn't) and could only eat soup but after that I wasn't too bad. I don't remember taking anything stronger than paracetamol. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing @MerryMarigold I am getting it done in the dentist. I also have a low pain threshold and am extremely anxious about it. I have had a tooth extracted before but that was before children and fairly straight forward.

@MrsHaroldRobbins were yours impacted? I'm not sure does that make a difference in terms of recovery. I just read another thread about dry socket...god my mind is racing with the fear!

Yes, they were impacted. They had to drill each one into four to get them out! Obviously, during the procedure itself I was sedated so floating on a cloud Grin But my recovery was really only a bit uncomfortable. I really hope you have a good experience.

Hi, I've posted a few times this week on same subject as I had x1 impacted tooth removed this week. I am also breastfeeding a 1yr old & have a 3yr old too.
I'd say breastfeeding hasn't been an issue - been able to carry on as normal in that regard.
Recovery has been hard though with 2 kids! Good your DH has taken time off work as mine couldn't so daytimes have been relentless.
I'd say what I found hard was doing night feeds but also couldn't sleep because of pain - side of my face was throbbing at night for two nights. However yesterday and today has been better.
Sorry if that doesn't sound great. The actual procedure with sedation was fine. But recovery has been sore first 48-72hrs after. Some people seem to be ok though.
