Gut health and probiotics?

Homelykind · 13/01/2023 15:14

I have gut/digestive issues.
I think I may have IBS as I match all the symptoms.

However, the symptoms come and go, and I can have periods of time when I’m ok. But I have noticed a difference in the urgency and frequency more recently.

I was thinking of taking a probiotic to improve my gut health.
just wondered if anyone takes them and if they do, did they see an improvement in their symptoms. And maybe any recommendations for a good one.

Hi OP what are your symptoms? I’m also interested in some tips for improving gut health.

I have read on here about Biokult probiotics and tried them a few months ago but I wasn’t taking them regularly so think I want to try them again. As far as I know you should start off really slowly so with Biokult you can take up to 4 capsules a day but I’m going to start with just one at night (I think you can take them any time of day but night may be more effective as you’re less likely to eat then etc).

I know it sounds odd but I've noticed that since I added artichokes to my diet, my stomach has been a lot better. Apparently they are v good for gut health.

The probiotics did nothing for me for some odd reason

I believe there is good evidence for foods such as kefir and sauerkraut more than the capsules. I keep meaning to try Chuckling Goat kefir - I’ve got a couple of friends who swear by it.

I w just started symprove. So far so good!

catfunk · 14/01/2023 20:15

Symprove is meant to be good but the recommendation is a variety of plant based foods (veg/ seeds/ nuts/ spices/ fruit) aim for 30 DIFFERENT ones a week

catfunk · 14/01/2023 20:15

Oh and fermented foods - Kimchee, saurkraut, kombucha, even yoghurt

TomAllenWife · 14/01/2023 20:35

Following my thread last nite I have purchased these today
Did minimal research but apparently they have enough strains etc

Hoping it'll make a difference because I can barely eat anything at the moment without being sick or having diarrhoea

Gut health and probiotics?

Whatever you take you have to take it daily for 3 months + to have any long term impact.

Symprove is expensive and tastes like crap but my lovely GP said it was the best.

Try Kefir.
It’s proven to improve good gut bacteria. Iirc samples were tested prior to starting and then 3 months after daily drinking. People in the testing groups were taking either Kefir, yakult type drinks or probiotic tablets daily. The Kefir drinkers had the biggest increase in good gut bacteria.
