Toddler still has hoarse cough especially at night time, could it be after-effects of bout of croup couple of months ago?

Just can't seem to shift this persistent night time cough. It's making him miserable and clingy in the mornings because of broken sleep (ditto his parents!). Had him at the GP last week who sounded his chest and said lungs were clear. Windpipe sounded a bit infected but he put this down to a recent cold. No meds etc prescribed, told that child coughs can take up to 6 weeks to shift. I forgot to mention his croup before Christmas and now wondering if I should take him back again as cough is still there and he sounds very hoarse when he's crying, a bit raspy. Anyone got any advice for a sleep-deprived mother and miserable toddler? Thanks x

Sometimes a night cough can indicate asthma, sure does for my DS.

The broken nights are a pita, but have no real advice for this.

I put a damp towel on the rad in evening, let a little fresh air in, prop the head end of bed/cot up on books, rub chest with vicks/snuffle babe (and give him his inhalers) but he still coughs away!

If no better in a week or so I would go back to GP, is it a group practice where you can see other GPs?

Thanks nortynamechanger. Have been doing the vicks rub and extra pillow already. Will try the damp towel on radiator tip from tonight. Have been wondering if he's a touch asthmatic but he doesn't sound particularly wheezy, just this hoarse and raspy cough. Is that similar to your ds? Will take him back to GP practice next week if no change.

Would go for books under the bed, rather than extra pillow as a) can't wriggle off it and b) extra bedding gets DS hotter and makes him cough more.

His isn't raspy, just repetitve and irritating (to all concerned)

Thanks again, norty
