Wisdom tooth extraction - normal recovery?

I had my lower wisdom tooth taken out 2 days ago. The pain is getting worse, as is the swelling. Also the teeth next to it now feel tender. Paracetamol and ibuprofen are helping a little.
I'm doing salt rinses and everything the dentist recommended.
Does this sound normal to you? I'm worried about dry socket but have heard it is agony.
How long did it take until pain stopped and swelling goes down?

I had 4 wisdom teeth removed at once. There was a lot of swelling and a fair amount of pain, I started to look more normal around days 6/7.
I’ve also had to have a single tooth removed after failed RCT, that felt loads better by day 4/5.

wishing you a speedy recovery.

I had dry socket after a wisdom tooth extraction. I feel traumatised as a result.

I also got a dry socket and it was awful (worse than labour).... 😩

I really hope you haven't got that.

Passpass · 12/01/2023 22:38

Anyway back to the question. 2 weeks of painkillers three times a day. 6 weeks to feel like my jaw wasn’t broken. Still recovering 4 months later. No pain but just discomfort. I’ve heard that without fry socket it’s a few days.

oh my, I need my wisdom tooth removing but my roots are super long and sit within the nerve of my jaw/cheek. I have to go to hospital and go under general anaesthetic and I am putting it off like crazy and even my dentist said they didn’t blame me! Was yours general or local? Dentist or hospital? Hope you feel better soon!

I had mine surgically removed 2 weeks ago. Had hardly any swelling or pain in the extraction sites but the worst thing has been the residual pain in my lower teeth on one side (that tooth had to be broken up to remove as the roots were slightly hooked) 😣 I tried eating solid food yesterday but realised my mouth is still too sore (cheek where they caught me breaking up the tooth) and later on I had shooting pain in the teeth I’ve been getting pain in anyway so am guessing it’s the trauma from the extraction 😩 From what you’ve said it all sounds normal. Hope the pain reduces soon 💐

@Whoknowswhatanymore Mine were taken out in hospital under GA, I highly recommend it! One of them was slightly wrapped around my jaw and was close to the nerve (surgeon said it was ‘a right bastard!’). The worst thing has been dealing with the residual pain in the teeth on that side, the rest has been and absolute breeze!

It takes a while to settle, it's quite a traumatic procedure. I had three extracted under GA as they were badly impacted. The first week was bad, swelling, bruising and sore. My neck disappeared. You really need to rest too. It'll be at least a month until it settles and the gum is healed and the holes filled with new bone.

I had dry socket after a molar removal. It was painful and miserable but as long as I took painkillers it wasn’t what I would call agony. I knew I had it because the blood clot came out of the socket. I know it’s harder to see with a wisdom tooth but that’s the best way to check. If it is I would recommend Ibuprofen and going back to the dentist who will pack it with gauze and oil of cloves to relieve the pain. I had this done once and then applied OOC myself inside the socket with a cotton bud. It lasted 6 weeks and was horrible. But it’s not forever there’s an end in sight.

CrapBucket · 14/01/2023 15:10

Keep taking painkillers and resting, try not to talk, if you can write down the issues and get someone to call 111 it might be worth getting seen. I have had 2 lots of wisdom tooth removals and it's a lot more brutal than people let on before hand. Good luck.

AIBU to think my doctor should have extended my antibiotics?
I have an infected cyst at the back of my neck. I was prescribed 7 days Doxycycline by the OOH doctor because it became really painful on a bank holiday weekend. The day after my last antibiotic I saw my GP and asked if I could have another 3 days supply because it was still sore and swollen. She said it looked like it was settling down and to go back if it flares up again. Well it has. I always thought it was a bad thing to stop taking antibiotics before an infection cleared up and it made more sense to me to take it for another few days than risk it flaring up again, because it would be worse and develop a resistance to the medication. Am I right to be furious?

Mydogatemypurse · 14/01/2023 15:21

Mine was sore and slightly swollen for 2 or 3 days. I was very lucky with the recovery as i think in general most people have it worse. I would call the dentist though as you might need anti biotics.

Yes i think this is good advice ring 111 they got me an emergency appointment the next day when i had a tooth infection. I feel really sorry for you, tooth pain is the worst pain.

LdnReno · 14/01/2023 21:53

Pain has calmed down a bit and so has swelling so hopefully heading in the right direction. It looks quite white where the tooth was, maybe these are stitches as i don't think it is tooth.

Anyone know when I can start eating normally again? On day 4 recovery and still not chewing & sticking to soft foods.
