hi in november i was diagnosed with type 2 diabites i was told if i improved my diet i should be fine and get my sugar levels under control unfortunatly i dont handle stress well i turn to food for confort and have found it difficuilt so have been told today my sugar levels are the same as they were in november.

i had these sugar level tests done on tuesday along with others one being blood pressure i cant remember what the other one was and they were fine so my question is how likely is it will i be put on insulin id rather be given another chance to get my diet under control and im nervous what the dr decides she wants to see me next thursday to talk about things

Have you had any proper advice on getting your diet under control? I know from my MIL that the advice can be a bit rubbish.

Nimbostratus100 · 12/01/2023 14:29

I do know people who have reversed type two diabetes with immediate and fast rate weight loss, but it did have to be immediate, in their cases, they were told waiting and then doing it once the diabetes was established wouldn't work. Is insulin normally used to treat type 2 though? I thought it was for type 1, who dont make insulin, rather than type 2, who make insulin, but have become resistant to it?

LIZS · 12/01/2023 14:32

Insulin is not first line medication for t2. There are different tablet medications like metformin usually offered first. It is not only about sugar in the diet though, reducing carbs, alcohol and other sources of high sugar such as fruit can all help. Infections and even moderate illnesses can raise levels too. Have you asked for a referral to a dietician or wellbeing coach , or looked one of the many online diabetic forums for advice.

I was diagnosed in December and started on metformin, I’m also low carbing to lose weight and see if I can reverse it. My GP suggested this was a good way to tackle it.

There’s something called the fast 800 which is supposed to be very good, but I can’t tolerate calorie counting or hunger so have opted for low carbing/keto instead.

i did ask for a referel for dietisn but i was told waiting list was too long an appointment was made with nurse as a follow up about diet because i had said i found it difficuilt to lose weight on my own that appointment was cancelled by gp surgery no reason given so i feel like ive been on my own

Sweetened, "diet" or no added sugar food are not always beneficial. Are you overweight?

DireBetes · 12/01/2023 14:39

Full fat milk is actually better than half fat - it’s about the sugars not the fat - when you take fat out of milk you’re left with a higher presence of lactose (milk sugars).

I’m still waiting to see the nurse, but yes, I had a long chat with the GP who said that most type 2 diabetics can reverse it eventually with a low carb diet, she told me this after prescribing metformin.

Diet Dr on Facebook is very good for information about this.

namedoesntmattter · 12/01/2023 14:43

according to what ive just looked up my bmi is 43.5

My mum is 76 and been type 2 for about 15 years. She's managed really well. She eats carefully but kept in a few treats so she has a few desserts per week but cut down drastically on carbs. She's only ever taken 2 medications not insulin. She's lost weight gradually and now is a size 10. I think they reduced the meds as she hardly needs it anymore.

You should have been referred to either the Diabetes Prevention program or the newly diagnosed program. There are NHS weight loss courses, you can self refer to some online. Personally I always recommend either low carb, fasting or Fast800 depending on what the person is willing to try. All have excellent results in reversing early insulin resistance.

You won't be put on insulin, some T2 have to have that further down the road if other meds and lifestyle changes don't work.

This is the standard advice.

There used to be a diabetic education programme (Desmond) www.desmond.nhs.uk which may operate in your area.

My DH reversed his type 2 diabetes by losing weight, he went to Slimming World and has successfully mainated his weight loss for a couple of years now. If you are overweight, would your GP refer you to SW (you might get some free weeks, my DH did). Good luck with the weight loss - the sooner you get started, the better and it will show the GP that you are serious about losing weight.

RightsHoarder · 12/01/2023 14:45

Have a look at Michael Moseley's Fast diet. Very very interesting. It's low carb and time restricted and designed to reverse type 2 diabetes

namedoesntmattter · 12/01/2023 14:45

i wasnt refered to any of those ragz just told to diet and left to my own devices

LIZS · 12/01/2023 14:46

43 bmi is high and tackling that would definitely help your health. Some gps can refer to weightwatchers and local exercise classes.
