Anyone done any at home or private allergy / intolerance testing that are actually accurate and reliable?

ive seen a few company’s then also read some are a scam and not worth the money.

Dont think the GP is going to refer me for my IBS symptoms just giving me IBS meds so just looking for alternatives or private ways to find out what’s triggering me

My son was diagnosed with IBS and pretty much told to cut out dairy and get on with it by the NHS. It didn’t help, he was so unwell, underweight and miserable. We used a company called Smartblood for private intolerance testing. They’re considerably cheaper than other tests out there. The test identified some strange intolerances and after we removed these things from his diet, probably 3 weeks, he was pretty much free of any symptoms. The test was £120 and if it’s affordable I’d do it. It honestly changed his life!
if you want to private message me I’m happy to chat further, I don’t want to plaster too much of my son’s information on the web!

Has the GP done Coeliac testing? Do you think it would be worth taking along the NICE Guidelines with you

Has the GP done the diagnostic testing recommended:

In people who meet the IBS diagnostic criteria, the following tests should be undertaken to exclude other diagnoses:
• full blood count (FBC)
• erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) or plasma viscosity
• c‑reactive protein (CRP)
• antibody testing for coeliac disease (endomysial antibodies [EMA] or tissue transglutaminase [TTG]). [2008]

@PritiPatelsMaker that’s useful to know, I might pop a message through and check. I definitely had some bloods done a few years ago but can’t remember if they included these.

@Whydidyouask ohh that’s great for your son. I might look into this company thanks so much for the reco!

You cannot test for intolerances!

This explains why:

In that case I'd book an appoint and request those tests.

DH was diagnosed with IBS without the tests being done. He wouldn't go back to the GP, god knows why. After years of suffering we realised that his symptoms only started after having sulphates.

All the York tests, including the "Smartblood" above are no more than scams. It's junk "science". Hair strand tests, blood pricks, urine etc cannot identify allergies or sentisitivities.

The only tests for allergies are skin prick tests (to SEE the actual reactions), food elimination diets (like FODMAP), and full blood tests (not from a drop of blood!).

Yarnosaura · 12/01/2023 13:23

York do actually now offer IgE testing which is a legit test, but any allergy test results need to be assessed by a suitably qualified clinician alongside a clinical assessment, because IgE tests are not, on the whole, diagnostic. And allergies aren't intolerances.

After months of Tintus and years of weird sensations and fatigue and 'full' ear sensations I'm suspecting an allergy. I just discovered a ton of black mould behind the wardrobe in my bedroom and suddenly a load of stuff makes sense.

I really feel I've eaten up too much of my Doctor's time over this. Is there a way I can get tested for black mould Allergy (and any other allergies that might be behind this) without involving my GP? Sounds like the home test kits are snake oil.
