I’ve had ankle ligament reconstruction which I thought was called a Brostrum? Is that what you mean?

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/01/2023 21:44

Yes @Trickleg

how long ago did you have it done ?

how long did it take to recover ?

to walk and drive

thanks

I had it done about 15 years ago - I was flat on my back for two weeks absolutely out of it on painkillers in an heavy cast and then a further 4 weeks on crutches in a lighter cast. Cast came off and ankle was very weak, months of physio. I can’t remember how long it was before I could drive but it was quite a while. Sorry not to be more positive - it was worth having, but it took years to feel fully confident in, say, jumping off a wall onto that ankle again

Trickleg · 11/01/2023 22:06

I could walk properly about 8 weeks after the operation I think

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/01/2023 11:57

Wow and ouch

thanks @Trickleg

i slipped over in feb last year and had issues with ankle since

consultant said 2/3w in cast ans no weight bearing

then 4/6in walkable boot and cab weight bare slowly

if I can’t drive I can’t work

so really have to drive asap

hoping 15yrs later things improve healing times

I’d hope that things have progressed! Very best wishes for a speedy recovery. My ankle is rock solid now and I used to turn it over almost daily, so was definitely worth doing

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/01/2023 21:34

I hope so. Thanks @Trickleg

Change your car to an automatic. Only needs one working foot!

FixTheBone · 14/01/2023 22:29

I Rehab my patients 2 weeks in a cast, non weightbearing, 4 weeks in a boot, 2 week partial, then 2 weeks fully weightbearing.

Aiming for return to sports at 12 weeks.

As for driving, minimum 6 weeks, even with an automatic it's not safe to drive wearing s boot as it can obstruct the pedals.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/01/2023 22:50

@minopd I've only had my car 6mths but assume if had an op I wouldn't be able to drive even an automatic within 6w

@FixTheBone are you a foot surgeon with your name?

What you wrote is what my consultant has said but obv depends how I heal

May be longer

But I guess I won't be driving for a good 6w

@Blondeshavemorefunhow did it go in the end? It's looking like I need to have this done soon so hoping for many positive stories 🤞

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/08/2025 11:20

Hi @Maryandmoses

i had it in jan 2023. Was 3w totally non weight bearing which meant 3w sleeping downstairs on my sofa (lovely to watch tv not the best to sleep on for 21 days) with a huge heavy cast up to my knee

and using a commode as no downstairs loo - lost all my dignity

hard cast on for 3w then off and think had 6w in a boot and was partial weight bearing for3w then to walk with crutches

after the 6w I went into a smaller ankle support for maybe a month or so

it did take me a long time to recover. much Longer then the consultant said

I had physio for around 9ths. Think I wa signed off around sept /oct 2023

what I will say it was so weird /hard not using leg at all for 3w that I lost a lot of muscle and leg very weak after no use for 3w

was very unsteady on leg and used a zimmer frame to hop for those 3w non weight baring. Then used it while learning to weight bare again

used crutches for ages and ankle felt very weak

it’s a lot better now but isn’t how it used to be

so im the best I can be but could be better - if that makes sense

driving wasn’t an issue even in the small ankle support so when I was allowed at think 9w I could

good luck
