I had a biopsy for suspected pancreatic cancer four weeks ago today. I don't have an appointment to get the results and the hospital has told me that I won't get the results for at least another two weeks and that the results will be sent by letter. Does anyone know if this is normal? I'm going out of my mind. Thank you

I had this experience with a family member. We thought it would be much quicker but found out after six weeks by letter that it was cancer. When questioned they said this was normal protocol.

Best of luck to you.

@CarrotCorn Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry to hear that your family member found out this way

Does anyone else have any experience of this? Please?

No experience of pancreatic cancer specifically but it doesn't sound right to me that you could potentially get a cancer diagnosis by letter. If there is a Maggie's Centre near you they may have a good idea of your hospital's usual processes and will almost certainly know who to speak to. Failing that, PALS?

DH results took weeks too, they also had several botched attempts before they got a good enough sample to get a result. We were told on the phone that is was definitely pancreatic cancer having been told all the way through the whole sorry episode that they were as sure as they could be that's what he had. In the end, after his Whipple's, his turned out to be cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). Pancreatic Cancer UK gave us a good deal of support even before diagnosis, have you got support?

Doesn't sound right to get a cancer diagnosis by letter. Usually it's being called in? Sorry to hear you are going through this, what a worry.

Thank you for the replies, I do appreciate it. I've had several biopsies in the past, sometimes they've been cancer, sometimes not but I've always been given the results in person. I've looked on the Pancreatic Cancer UK website and I might give them a ring.

This is absolutely NOT normal. You should have biopsy results within a week. Two at the most.

I hope you got sorted.

I've had pancreatic cancer - now cured x

Thank you to everyone who replied
@Amybelle88 can I ask what treatment you had please? I'm awaiting a date for a Whipple's procedure

@Magnusfanclub i don’t have experience but I wanted to say I’m sorry you’ve had bad news and I hope your operation goes really well and is successful x

DH had gem/cis after his Whipple's (but his was bile duct cancer not pancreatic, the bile duct diagnosis didn't come until after his Whipple's). If you are on Facebook Whipple Warriors is a good page. Good luck OP, I wish you well.

@Twinsmummy1812 Thank you

@bloodywhitecat Thank you and my heart goes out to you. I've read some of your previous threads. I'm not on Facebook, but I might join and have a look at Whipple Warriors. I'm just hoping I don't have to wait too much longer for the surgery.

@Magnusfanclub I had chemotherapy before my whipples (folfirinox) - whipples procedure and then 6 months of chemo post whipples (Gemcitabine and capecitabine).

The chemo before the whipples was a bit of a trial when I had it, but has since been proven to yield excellent results (me included!).

I was 27 when I had cancer and I'm 34 now - 5.5 years out. I was stage 3b.

I never used any whipples groups (under the advice of my nurse) as every single cancer is different and different hospitals have different protocols. I was treated in the royal Liverpool hospital which is a world renowned pancreatic specialist unit - I was really lucky to genuinely have the elite doctors, professors and surgeons on my case. I didn't doubt them for a minute.

Being put forward for a whipples procedure is fantastic - I'll be straight - they don't do it if they don't think they can get all of the cancer out. It sounds like you have a brilliant prognosis so please keep this strong in your mind. The surgery is huge and you will have a long recovery afterwards but it's totally, totally worth it xx
