Mirena coil experiences

Have been having irregular bleeding for 3 years between period and ovulation. Have had 3 ultrasounds and the only suggestion that has been made is possible adenymosis. Gynae has suggested mirena coil 3 times now but I am reluctant as heard that it can cause the following:

  1. irregular bleeding I already have this so anymore bleeding will just push me over the edge
  2. weight gain (having worked hard to lose 2.5 stone recently this really puts me off)
3. long lasting abdo/pelvic pain. Just looking for people's experiences really as they have booked me in for it fitting and feel a bit rail roaded into it. Also does it affect libido does anyone know as I had extremely low infact pretty none existent libido when I have previously been on pill/had implant?

I have lost count of how many I have had but other than crampy pain for a few hours after insertion I have had no side effects and no periods.

I've had mine out now as about to start TTC however, I can't recommend the mirena coil enough. Sure, when it was inserted it was pretty crampy and painful, I don't think I fully understood that at the time so it came as a shock, but just be aware the insertion cramps are like awful period pains, and then it's fine!
My periods essentially stopped after it being in for roughly 5/6 months, I had it in for 5 years and I can barely remember any bleeding. The month I had it out my periods came back, I've checked with OPK sticks that I'm ovulating regularly and I have fairly consistent 28 day cycles, right from when the coil came out.
I didn't notice any weight gain, or weight loss for that matter. A doctor told me once the only thing that makes you gain weight is consuming too many calories, hormones can make you want to eat more, but just don't be silly about it.
Sex drive was absolutely the same as normal. Didn't notice any changes pre or post coil.

I had one to supposedly reduce heavy bleeding due to fibroids.
The short story is that it didn't work.
The long story is that it made the bleeding even heavier, more frequent, I had spotting nearly all the time, I had period pains like I'd never had in my life before (had days off work sick it was so bad), I flooded through my clothes on a number of occasions, had to wear tampons and towels as back up to make it through meetings at work, I gained weight and had no libido. Thankfully it bled itself after about a year of being told it might settle down.
I would honestly file it under a year of hell.

I can't recommend it enough, no side effects no periods. Had it for 18 months wouldn't use anything else

BraveMaeve · 10/01/2023 12:16

I'd highly recommend it. I had a copper coil previously which was awful. After the first few weeks/months I haven't had bleeding or pain and actually haven't had a period for years now which is great.

Itsanewme · 10/01/2023 18:48

Couldn't recommend it enough.
Have mine in 13 months. No bleeding at all and no other side effects.
Had been wary of getting it due to heating lots of negative stuff but I am so glad I went ahead now.

Best invention ever, I originally had mine for horrendous peri menopausal periods and am now on my third. After a few months of spotting my periods stopped completely it was such a relief, I'm now 53 and use it for the progesterone part of HRT.

I had no problems with mine. No bleeding from the start. But I had low sex drive. No other issues.

Thegirlhasnamechanged · 10/01/2023 19:30

I’ve had one and had no issues with it. I am currently waiting an urgent referral for a bunch of ultrasounds though due it going walkabout and needing to find out if it’s gone further in or has come out without my knowing.

Hi
ive just had my mirena removed after 2 years. I’ve had a bit of a love hate relationship with mine. Inserted due to heavy bleeding and it def sorted that out. I barely bled at all. However I have felt under a black cloud the entire time. Lacking energy and motivation, weight gain and insatiable appetite and no sex drive at all. It’s been out a week and I feel so much better already.
i’d give it a go. If it doesn’t suit you can always have it removed.

Talipesmum · 12/01/2023 20:32

Got mine 18 months ago. It’s been great.

Bleeding for the first 3 months ish was definitely irregular. They said it would be to start with. It was like having normal periods, a bit lighter than usual, but fairly consistent light bleeding most of the time inbetween times (but I’d just have a pantyliner and that would be sufficient).

Then, the bleeding pretty much stopped. I still get periods but they’re 2-3 days, very very light. No spotting any more.

No weight gain that I’ve noticed - at least, I’ve had a fair bit on and off but it entirely correlates to me eating too much food and when I am more careful I’ve been losing weight. No additional effects from the coil.

And no cramps or pain at all. It was a bit uncomfortable getting it fitted but only for a minute or so, and no pain at all after. But to be fair I never get normal period cramps either.

@Holidayyys I know this is an old thread but did you go ahead with the Mirena? I was (unexpectedly) diagnosed with adenomyosis a few weeks ago and my gynae is also pushing it as a solution. I am cautious for all the same reasons you outline above and not sure the benefits will outweigh the potential side effects. If you did have it has it helped, and have there been any negative effects?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/04/2023 13:06

I got one fitted last July. I found the insertion very painful. I’m still getting bleeding which is annoying - it’s never enough to need a tampon and just comes and goes with no real pattern.

After the fitting the doctor couldn’t find it with the vaginal scan so I needed an abdominal scan which took until February to come through - the scanner said everything looked good and that it could take a year for the bleeding to settle.
