Hi i took my baby to drs this morning as he had high temp, vomiting, rash, sleepy, cold hands etc so obviously i was worried. He checked him over and said it was just a viral infection due to him having a cold. He said to give him some paracetamol and fluids. Later that day he threw up his dinner (jars of puree) and took very little milk. He's refusing his paracetamol (it doesnt taste nice) and has a temp. Has anyone got any tips on how i could make him for comfortable? I've dabbed him down with a cool flannel but he's still hot. Thank u

Have you given him water? Dd was sick yesterday but so I kept offering sips of water.
Have you got a syringe for the paracetamol - if you squirt little bits into the cheek pouch then he might swallow some. If you're facing the tightly shut gums (as per my dd when I try to give her medicine) I put a finger in her mouth to get her to suck and squirt the calpol in at the same time.
Hope he feels better soon.

sounds like your first baby
i was exact the same with dd. its the horrible weather, i hate winter.
well, i think your gp is right. there is terrible cold around.
vomitting food and milk is very normal when they have cold.
how old is your baby? check his temp, if its very high, you better contact nhs direct.
are you using calpol? unfortunately we cant do much
offer milk and food often, and keep them cool use olbas oil or vick if needed
if you got question, please ask
hth,

how old is your baby?? if you are BF ing then that is all they need. Forget water (IMHO!) keep him/her skin to skin with you or DH (thats bare skin) it is hugely beneficial in more than one way... helps them to regulate temp and sends relaxing signals to their brain so their imune syst can do its thing unimpeded. LOL

Teperature is a sign baby's body is WORKING WELL fighting infection. however temps can get out of hand in tiny ones hence the importance of skin t skin!!

Thanks for all your responses he's 6 and 1/2month old. I'm not breastfeeding anymore unfortunately so it has to be formula. He is taking little bits of formula not as much as usual and little sips of water. Just cooled him down with a flannel and put him to bed in just his pjs as he is still warm so didnt want to over heat him with a blanket. Yeh this is my first child (is it that obvious!). I'll have to try a sringe tomorrow as hes just clamping his mouth shut if i come near him with a spoon. thank u for the tips i will try skin to skin if he wakes in the night. I glad temperature is a sign that the bodys fighting the injection at least he's on the right path. Will check him more than usual tonight so i know he's not too hot or cold. Thanks 4 your comments i just hate to see him poorley. xxxx

dont worry, you just reminded me myself. i was so worried when dd was poorly when she was about 6m.
i have now 5m old ds, and he has been poorly last couple of days, surprisingly im taking it calm. i dont stick into feeding time, i just offer milk(formula) when ever he seems hungry. he is been vomitting last nigt and i know how hurtful it is.
yes syringe is the best with babies who hate medicine. dd hated medicine and we always used syringe. but ds seems love medicine.
hope your baby will get better for you.
take care,

pinkyp · 04/02/2008 22:19

Thank you d for diva, glad to know i'm not the only one! lol. If i could wrap him up in cotton wool i would!! Do you think i should just give him bottles tomorrow rather than baby food too? or shall i just carry on like a normal day or just offer baby rice?
Hows your ds today? Hope hes better, i wish kids wouldnt get poorley xxx

How is your ds today pinky? And yours Diva?
I am exactly the same with dd - she's been coughing and snotty for over a week and we've had 2 major vomit incidents - I just wanted to rush her into hospital and get the top doc to give her the once over even though I know she is just poorly and will get better with time and cuddles.
I am back to our routine feed times but with very bland solids (sweet potato mostly), but when she was sick I just offered her milk and water throughout the day with no routine at all.
Hope your ds is on the mend

give foods high in starch helps with sickness mash was great for my ds

ice pops to give juice as it dissolves slower and doesnt lay heavy on the stomach to make them vomit

cut milk down and just give juice and ice pops and starchy food until sickness slows down then offer more milk

you can syringe small bits of calpol at atime and then you can see whats going in and if sick you can leave 10 mins then try with rest of calpol
hope he feels better xx

Thank you! Me and my dp got 2 hours sleep last night! he was sick all over his bed too at 4am which was a bit messy! He drank a full 8oz of water this morning when he woke though! poor baby must of been thirsty! He seemed a little bit better tiday and alot brighter this eveing! He's only having 4oz still instead of 8 about 2-3 times, the rest of the time he'll take a couple of oz here and there. He's also having sips of water and has had some baby rice and 2 jars of bland baby food and kept them down! yay! well most of it, he had a bit of a cough after his carrot puree and had a bit of that come up but only a bit. Managed to give him some calpol whilst distracting him! Oh got the sringe too - alot easier thanks!
Hows ur dd now meep? How old is she? Hope shes feeling well soon!

meep · 07/02/2008 13:11

Oh pinkyp - it is rubbish when they are sick at night - so far dd has only had her worst moments during the day - with just little coughing fits at night. Glad your ds is eating and drinking more - that is the main thing.
DD is 7mo - she's just started nursery so i reckon that's why she is full of nasty bugs!

Poledra · 07/02/2008 13:14

Keep him drinking the water - dehydration happens to them so easily when they're vomiting and running a temp.

pinkyp · 07/02/2008 23:44

hey everyone thanks for your get well wishes and advice, he seems to be alot better now although he's still go dirrea and not eaten or drinking half as much. Got some sachets from drs to mix with his water to keep him hydrated he is having about 15oz of milk at most and about 5oz of water so he's still drinking plenty. xx
