Mum has possible endometrial cancer?

My mum told me today she is getting a hysteroscopy under GA tomorrow and a biopsy.

She is 52 post menopausal, experienced some bleeding and bloating. Had an ultrasound her uterus lining is 7.5mm when it should be 5.

From what I have googled it isn’t looking good and seems likely to be endometrial cancer but I’m unsure if I am worrying too much.

Does anyone have experience of this and it was another diagnosis and how is the outlook for this type of cancer?

It could be adenomyosis.. I wouldn't jump immediately to cancer in this instance. So many gynaecological things it could be. The tests are to rule things out as much as diagnose. Good luck. I know it's scary.

I had this a month ago but not under GA. The culprit was a large fibroid which was removed. Nothing suspicious.

I had similar symptoms and it was a polyp which they removed. It was extremely worrying waiting for the procedure so I hope your Mum is ok too.

I've had 'suspected' pre-cancerous endometrial issues. It actually wasn't that--it was a different kind of endometrial hyperplasia. That was two and a half years ago. I am still kept under regular observation but I haven't developed cancer. I had bleeding and there was some fluid they couldn't account for in my pelvis.

I had this done earlier this year as I my endometrium was measuring 12mm. They removed three polyps and inserted a Mirena coil to treat the hyperplasia. The biopsies were clear. I also have an ovarian dermoid cyst measuring 6.5cm. They’re just monitoring things with scans now. (I’m 61, so post menopausal too.

I had almost exactly this situation a couple of years ago when I was the same age as your mum. It wasn’t cancer. There was a polyp that was removed and the result of the biopsy on the womb lining was ‘weakly proliferative’ even though I was officially post-menopausal, the gynaecologist told me something must have briefly started up my ovaries again. Cancer is possible, but it is not the most likely explanation. Caught early endometrial cancer has good survival rates treated surgically alone (I looked all this up at the time!). I hope your mum has a similarly benign outcome.

That was me exactly a year ago. Bleeding after menopause which led to ultrasound which found my uterus lining to be 14mm. This led to biopsy and everything coming up as totally normal. I had a further ultrasound 6 months later as the initial one also picked up cysts. The uterus lining was back within 4mm.

It is very common especially early after the start of the menopause. Even if it is malignant, caught early, it is a cancer very treatable with a good survival rate.

Mine was endometrial cancer. If you have to have cancer this is one of the easier ones to have. Removing the uterus and ovaries and for most women, that's over and done with. I did have cancer in my sentinel nodes but even so it's 6 monthly check ups for 3 years.

Good luck to your mother. It is one of the more survivable cancers, the survival rates are good.

My mum was one of the unusual, unlucky, ones whose post menopausal bleeding WAS due to endometrial cancer but it was stage one so fully resolved by a complete hysterectomy. This was quite a few years ago.
