Anyone else had experience with gum disease / bone loss that is fixable and how?

I’m 40, I brush, floss, don’t smoke and don’t eat much sugar. My gum disease and bone loss is intense - despite regular deep cleans and thousands of pounds spent at dentists.

now I’m in constant pain, major sensitivity with eating cold or hot food and I’m so self conscious about talking I’ve lost all my confidence.

I am just at a loss what to do? I have tried and spent time and money but nothing works?

has anyone had their teeth removed and just gone with dentures? Does that stop the pain? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

It’s crap isn’t it. I’ve worn a gum veneer for 20 years or so, which helps enormously with confidence. I’ve just had a new one fitted and I bloody hate it! My gums have changed since the last fit 13 years ago and the new one feels so uncomfortable. My dentist said it’ll take time to get used to it. I cried again today about it. Thinking about tooth veneers as an alternative but I’ll have to have the teeth shaved down and although my gums are crap my actual teeth are good - no stains, chips, no fillings. So worried I’ll be affecting the health of the tooth on top of everything else. Have seen a specialist periodontist who recommended this course of action (gum grafting wouldn’t give me the results I want).

Thank you so much for this post ♥️

Are those probiotics helpful for gums then as I can’t find any specifically for helping gum disease. Only ones for gut health.

Deedoo · 21/09/2023 13:59

@JKDcot did your pain resolve x

JKDcot · 21/09/2023 14:33

Thank you they did. But the damage is done and I can’t seem to find a cure

I’m not very experienced with all things gums so ignore me if you like. Just thought I could give you advice about the pain.

I have sore swollen gums a lot of the time, years of issues with my teeth / gums. I have to see the hygienist / have quite a few back teeth missing etc.

I use Colgate perio guard toothpaste and Colgate peroxyl mouthwash. The peroxyl mouthwash is the only thing to sort any inflammation out, one particular part of my gum swells and throbs and pisses blood quite regularly, teeth are so sensitive and my ear on that side hurts, my throat mimicks tonsillitis but it only happens when the gum is playing up. Dentist always says no infection just inflammation so I never get any antibiotics. I just had a 3 week flare up where I was convinced it was abscessed (it wasn’t) they did an X-ray, it was just the gum disease. The peroxyl has sorted it again. I’m going to see the hygienist next week for a clean.

I’ve spent a fortune on different mouthwashes / gels / potions. (Corsodyl and the like did nothing for me)

Those 2 things I mentioned are the only ones to help my pain.

mrandmrsrobinson · 27/09/2023 16:24

Haven't read the whole thread. If you're on meds check with the dentist. Side effects can be gum recession/disease.

Deedoo · 27/09/2023 16:26

@danni0509 and the gum / tooth pain went? Did it come back xx

Deedoo · 27/09/2023 16:29

@danni0509 Iv had gum Inflamation for 7 weeks now. Tried cordysol paste and mouth wash and it did nothing. So
will try this x

Deedoo · 27/09/2023 16:31

@danni0509 where did you purchase them from ? Xx

Floss is no good if you’re bone loss is extensive. You should try Tepes instead (should feel snug so make sure the size/colour is correct - they do a multipack of all sizes so you could try them all)

  1. Tepe once daily minimum
  2. electric toothbrush twice daily, angle towards gumline - brushing half the gum and half the tooth in small back and forth motions - don’t scrub - make sure to brush all surfaces (you’d be surprised how many people don’t brush the inside)
  3. visit the hygienist, or NHS dentists can and should offer RSD too (cleaning under the gum) - this is not the same as a ‘scale and polish’ clean at the dentist. Every 3 months if you have active gum disease. Your toothbrush can only clean a couple of millilitres below gumline but gum disease presents with pockets of 4mm or deeper so it is essential really to have them professionally cleaned
  4. don’t smoke or vape
  5. check you don’t have undiagnosed diabetes - if you do, make sure it is well controlled.
  6. use disclosing tablets (vegetable dye) to highlight areas which may be being missed with cleaning.

Dentures are an option but not necessarily an easy one, particularly lower dentures can take time to get used to and depending on bone levels, may not be that sturdy. You could consider magnetic/implant retained dentures but this is costly and done by a dental implantologist. The more you wear a denture the quicker you will adapt to it. Lisping is common at the beginning and It should take 2-3 weeks of consistent wear to adapt to a denture but people often give up before this and struggle to get past this hurdle.

Also, family history plays a big part too so sometimes a very small amount of bacteria can cause havoc for some whereas with others, the same amount may not cause any problems at all.

So I’m thinking of trying probiotics which I’ve heard can help gum disease.
Wondering if anyone has tried these?

I had badly receding gums which my dentist said was due to teeth grinding.

He showed me how my short jaw was causing me to grind my teeth and how my bite should be a lot further back. and I had a fitted mouth guard to help me reposition it.

I had gum grafts top and bottom.

I have now stopped wear the mouth guard and my dentist says he thinks things are stable now. Fingers crossed.

It was very scary and I hope you find a solution.

I had years of treatment at the dental hospital. One time my dentist was going to refer me yet again for another round
And I just asked him if it was worth it? He agreed with me that I would be a lot more comfortable without but it was up to me.
I had had 20 years of treatment and my teeth were showing the wear and tear you can't avoid with difficult treatment. So I had them out.
I got my smile back. I lost the discomfort of extreme sensitivity.I got my confidence back.
It's worth thinking about extraction.

My DH has always had tooth and gum trouble and recently was told he needed specialist treatment for his gums involving awful sounding stuff like building up the bone, implants and so on.

I had read somewhere about the importance of probiotics for gum health, they now know that gum health is important for the immune system and heart health as well as teeth. I was already taking an incredibly good probiotic supplement for my guts from a company called Bulk.com (www.bulk.com/uk/complete-bio-culture.html )
but you could do your own research (lots out there) about specific useful bacteria, eg.

Probiotic bacteria derived from the genera Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, and Weissella are found to play an effective role in the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fcimb.2022.806463/full

I made sure he took these every day and I suggested that maybe marine collagen would make a difference because collagen builds bone, we both take it for skin and the results are amazing.

He took these supplements for a couple of months and when he went back the hygienist was impressed at the change in his oral health and said he didn't need the work that had been recommended. So he is signed off. This may not be what you want to hear but it is always worth doing your own research I think and dentistry is a profession that has got a lot wrong over the years (some of us have teeth full of fillings as a result!!). Worth a try, good luck.

Hi @notsosoftanymore Just wondered how your husband was doing and whether the probiotics and marine collagen were still doing the job? My DH is having awful trouble with his gums. Just having the deep cleaning now - has had two quarters done and dentist said it's looking positive that he's got it all there. Two more to go. The issue is that he doesn't have any problems with his dental hygiene; it's excellent according to his dentist and two hygienists who've seen him. He also has hygienist clean every 3 months anyhow (we did this because I was worried about dentists closing again after the initial lockdown, and we've just continued with it), still has not stopped the periodontitis! Dentist thinks it's likely hereditary 😫. Anyhow, once the cleanings done (private so ££££!) we want to try to stave it off and I saw your post. I was already wondering about collagen for the reasons you gave. So my questions are (if you don't mind!!) is the marine collagen and probiotics still working for your DH? And what marine collagen do you take?

Thank you!
