Took ds to the doctors tonight. He was coughing quite badly at the weekend.

She's given him a new puffer. A purple one. Not seen one of those before. Its called Seretide. Meant to be stronger etc.

And he has a 5 day course of steroids to get him back on track. Soluble prednisolone Tablets.

She said he was wheezy (she never normally says that about him) and his peak flow was only 80. It should be 140 for his height and age. (5yrs, 110cm)

I think he's got worse generally. Coughs more after activity etc.

We have to call her on thursday with an updated peak flow reading.

Just wondered how common the purple ones are.

My sister uses a purple one, but my ds's consultant said a purple one was to strong from children

princessmel · 04/02/2008 21:03

She checked on the computer. I saw it said from 4 yrs. 1 puff twice a day.
I asked if he'd go back to the brown one later but she said 'no, this one is better/more effective' words to that effect.

Ds has got the purple one and he's just turned 3.

He's had it for about 9 months. At the moment he is on four puffs morning and night but his usual dose is 2 morning and night.

Ds is bad at moment too (see thread just spent 3 days in hosp)

What other medication is your ds on.

junkinmytrunk · 04/02/2008 21:22

dd needs an other inhaler as she is on the blue one and it doesn't seem to do anything but my gp says she's too young to be diagnosed with asthma....she's 5yrs!!

is the purple one doing the trick?

alibobins · 04/02/2008 21:28

He first had the brown one Becotide then went onto an orange one called Flixotide then onto seritide.

It has helped a bit but ds has brittle asthma so needs alot of meds but is still unpredictable

emkana · 04/02/2008 21:29

ds has been on the purple one since he was 13 months

It has turned things around for him, he's soooooooooo much better now

princessmel · 04/02/2008 21:44

alibobbins, ds had the brown one twice a day, then got the blue one when he was about 2. Just got the purple one this evening. Only 1 puff twice a day.
Never had an attack or been hospitilized thank goodness.

jimmy ask your gp about the brown one. Its the preventative one.

DD (10) has a light purple one (sort of mid purple maybe) but is also on singulair

We have had brown, white, several greens

princessmel · 04/02/2008 21:48

What are the white and green ones?

OP posts:
alibobins · 04/02/2008 21:48

Has he still got the ventolin (blue one) as well

KatyMac · 04/02/2008 21:49

Different steroids

They work for a bit then get changed

Normally changed when something new comes on the market

DH & my dad have had loads of colours & even some odd shapes

KatyMac · 04/02/2008 21:51

Two shades of brown, two shades of pink 2-4 shades of green, 2 shades of orange

Aerosols, round things, powder ones - there are loads of types

SlightlyMadShrek · 04/02/2008 21:51

The purple one is a longer acting beta agonist than your blue salbutamol inhaler. I don't think it can be used as a "rescue" therapy though as it doesn't work as quickly as the blue inhaler. Could be wrong though.

Do you know if you still need to keep/use the blue one

Seretide also contains a steroid similar to that which is in the brown inhaler - so there will be no need to go back to brown.

Jennster · 04/02/2008 21:54

You can still use the blue for rescue, but you shouldn't need to use it as frequently now your ds is on the purple.

princessmel · 04/02/2008 21:55

Yes he still has the blue one to use as and when he needs it.

She said he won't go back to the brown.

I hope he wont need all these other colours

Jennster · 04/02/2008 21:58

No you're all rainbowed up. Purple = orange/brown + green.

alibobins · 04/02/2008 21:58

Ds still uses his blue one 4 times a day.

He's got atrovent aswell which is green and white. He's also on singular at night.

Really hope the seretide helps it really helps ds inbetween bad attacks.

princessmel · 04/02/2008 21:59

Really? is purple the same medication as orange/brown and green together?

princessmel · 04/02/2008 22:00

alibobbins your ds sounds bad. Poor thing. How old is he? Does he go to hospital a lot?

Jennster · 04/02/2008 22:03

Poor Alibobette. Sounds like you're an expert.

Princessmel, if you are in any way confused, ring the pharmacist and find out when would be best to speak to them and get a one to one explanation when they aren't rushed off their feet and distracted.

alibobins · 04/02/2008 22:03

It seems to come in stages he has been admitted about 10 times for at least 24-48 hours but been in a&e alot more

Inbetween attacks you would't know anything was wrong.

alibobins · 04/02/2008 22:04

He was three at christmas.
