Does this seem a lot of medication for type 2 diabetes?

DH is type 2 diabetic diagnosed around 4 years ago. He’s on Metformin and Dapaglifozin daily and has to inject himself once a week with Trulicity. It just seems like a lot.

What's he doing to get his blood sugar under control?

ProseccoOnIce · 08/01/2023 22:56

What's his HbA1c?

Bestcatmum · 08/01/2023 23:01

His HBa1c must be sky high, well over 100 to be on all those drugs. Keep an eye on his feet. Dapagliflosin can cause skin ulceration. Report to GP straight away if this occurs. High blood sugar can cause blindness, kidney and organ failure amongst many other problems so I really do hope he is taking this very seriously.

It’s not massively high I will ask him tomorrow but i think it’s in the 50’s or less.

That is a lot for a HBA1C in the 50s.

Mine was 68 on diagnosis and I went on 500mg metformin twice a day.

Now down to 36 and I take 1 metformin a day.

Never had either of the other two meds recommended.

What does he eat? Dp was on metformin and glicazide but dropped eventually both by going no carb (under consultant supervision) it seems a lot for a lvl of 50ish does he check his blood sugars?

cortisolqueen · 08/01/2023 23:12

If that amount of medication is working to keep his blood sugar at the right level, then it's the right amount for him.

Is he under the hospital diabetes team or GP?

Whyisitsososohard · 08/01/2023 23:19

I think whether it's a lot will massively depend on his hba1c, his fasting and post meal levels and other health issues.

ProseccoOnIce · 09/01/2023 07:03

I frequently see people on this amount of medication; if it's controlling his t2 with target HbA1c of 53ish then that is fine.

If his diabetes progresses in the future then he will likely need insulin.

He started on just one medication that wasn’t enough after a while so started another and then the same again. It does seem under control now which is good. He must just need that much.
