Constant cold sores

DisneyGirl2329 · 08/01/2023 10:04

Both myself and my DH are constantly plagued with cold sores. I know there are a lot worse things to have but it is really starting to get me down. I'm lucky in that they never spread and are contained to my top lip. But it means I can't kiss my lovely 2 year old or DH. Then by the time mine has gone (roughly 10 days) 9 times of 10 my DH gets one! It is a viscous cycle. I felt the familiar tingling yesterday and low and behold another cold sore. Is there anything I can do/take to prevent these?

What treatment do you currently? I use Zovirax initially then move on to cymex as I find it's better for healing. My friend had mire trouble with them and found a light machine really effective.

Sorry bit late answering this but my GP has just prescribed me a 6 month course of acclivor tablets to keep mine at bay. Could you and your DH try this?

singswithitsfingers · 26/05/2023 16:54

I used to find Zovirax worked really well when you felt the first tingle - had to always have it with me. But now (early 50s) I haven't had a cold sore for at least 10 years, having had them very frequently. Perhaps it's something that goes with age? Small comfort for now I know.

I have acclivor tablets from the gp for cold sores, when I first feel the tingle I start to take them and most times they don’t develop. Definitely worth asking your dr.

I also have aciclovir on prescription. My lips have been so badly damaged in the past that the first I know of them is a cluster of blisters - I don't get any warning tingle - and start the tablets 5 times a day, straightaway. I use a factor 50 lip balm and try and avoid direct sunlight, plus take vitamin supplements when I'm feeling run down as they crop up then too.

L-lysine tablets every day. I used to get a bad one every month for years but haven’t had one for about 7 years since taking them. I have a couple of friends who have had the same experience

Another one for accilovir tablets, I was getting them so much it was also really getting me down, than I had a massive blister breakout all over my lips and accilovir helped. I get the occasional one now but it's maybe once very 6 instead instead of once or twice a month.

I was thinking the same thing recently. I got constant cold sores in my 20s and 30s, but now I'm in my 40s I can't actually remember when I last had one, it must be a few years ago? I wonder if it's something to do with age/hormones

AluckyEllie · 26/05/2023 18:05

I get them whenever my period is due so definately hormonal. Also when I’m run down or working night shifts 🙄. I swear by the dispensable vitamin c tablets, take one of those every day when I feel one coming on and it helps

ilovemydog123 · 26/05/2023 18:05

I suffer with cold sore too and haven't had one since using it
