hydrocele - any advice ?

Hi,

DS3 was diagnosed with a hydrocele last January when he was 12 months old. They said it may close up on it's own, or may require surgery, and gave us an appointment for Jan 2005. It hasn't closed up, and I received a letter today saying the appointment has been moved to March (consultant on annual leave for the original date). Assuming he is going to need surgery - do I accept the March appointment, or hassle to get an earlier one and get things moving?

Are there any implications for waiting longer ?

Sorry i cant help - not sure what hydrocele is 0 just bumping this up for you

I didn't know what it was either - basically it is fluid in the testicle. When the testicles descend the passage is supposed to close up - if it doesn't then fluid drains down in to the teste. It needs minor surgery to close the gap apparently. Apparently fairly common in babies, but usually clears up by about 18 months.

Hi my son had one which we all thought was a hernia till the surgeons went in and discovered it was actually a hydrocele.it is a very quick op and i cant even see ds scar anymore its os small.I dont think there would be any implications of waiting for the surgery as its just fluid which isnt going anywhere and wont do any harm.DS was very hugely one sided IYKWIM until he had his op and was totally fine.

Ds2 had this done at about7 years of age. We were told it had always been present but only really showed up when he started doing lots of sport. He was taken in fairly quickly once I got round to taking him to the doctor (I had noticed the swelling at bath times for ages before I realised it was only one side and not normal) I don't know if there is any risk attached to waiting 4 months - would imagine it depends on size and how much and how quickly it swells up. Ds2 was OK in the mornings and got worse as the day went on. Why don't you ask you GP? HTH

thanks - it doesn't seem to be changing at all - has been the same for months. And we have a good idea of what it would look like as he has an identical twin who doesn't have it .

I think I might ring the hospital and ask them how long the waiting list for the op would be.

I'm sorry - I thought the appointment for the op. was in March. I'd find out how long the waiting list is going to be as its not considered urgent ( I don't think) and then talk to Dr. again.
