"Just" trapped wind? Warning TMI

OuchMyTummy · 05/01/2023 11:07

I thought I had a tummy bug this morning - terrible stomach cramps and a couple of loose bowel movements. I'm still in bed with horrible pains ongoing, but so far no d&v as I'd expected.
My question: how bad can trapped wind feel? I had a meal last night with unusual (for me) numbers of lentils and beans. Could that have possibly causes discomfort this bad? It's HORRIBLE

Yes trapped wind is absolutely excruciating...as bad, if not worse than labour pains. I had it on xmas day and boxing day after lunch. Try a medication containing simeticone such as windsettlers or wind-eeze as this helps your body to pass the trapped air bubbles more easily.

NormalNans · 05/01/2023 12:34

Lie on your left side if you can. You can also try wind relieving yoga pose - lie on your back and hug your knees into your chest. Rock from side to side

Lentils punish me brutally from the inside out. It’s probably that. If you can afford a morning in bed to fart your life away in private, do.

CaraVann · 05/01/2023 13:09

As a long term IBS sufferer sadly your symptoms are a regular thing for me. Lentils would tear my guts to pieces but you are used to them. Although maybe combined with other things you’ve eaten recently (especially with all the rich christmas foods) it may just have tipped your digestive system over the edge.
Peppermint tea and simethicone always help shift trapped gas. And a heat source like a hot water bottle or heat patch.
I feel for you, never underestimate the absolute agony of trapped wind. I’ve rolled around the floor in agony many a time.

I had what I thought was trapped wind. Was massaging my tummy where the pain was, doing yoga twists etc. then up in the night in agony and tears. Turned out it was diverticulitis with scans showing large infection. Awful.

Reindear · 05/01/2023 13:27

Trapped wind for me is agony- sharp stabbing pains.
ibs pains is more like labour with the waves of contraction like pain for me
I hope it eases soon op - sounds horrible

JodiePants · 05/01/2023 13:38

Peppermint tea helps. After my c section, the trapped wind was 100x worse than the pain from the incision! I honestly thought my stomach was going to explode.

Candyflosscrochet · 05/01/2023 13:40

You don't say where the pain is?
I had what I thought was trapped wind/indigestion for several months, waves of pain, lasting hours, having to twist myself into all sorts of positions to try and get relief and drinking gallons of peppermint tea and gaviscon.
Then I had an episode that felt like Labour, central just below my ribs. Had to call an ambulance.
Turns out it was gallstones.
After several more attacks, jaundice, pancreatitis (also very painful) and 3 hospital admissions, I had it out a few months ago.
So if your pain is under your ribs, it might be gallstones or pancreatitis, especially if you have nausea too.
Hand hold....I know the pain!

Notsuchaniceguy · 05/01/2023 13:45

My sympathies. I had something like this on Tuesday and once before in my life. On both occasions due to too many peanuts I think. I think my bowel was trying to squeeze a solid mass along the tube so every time it contracted I'd have 5-10 seconds of agony and then a minute or so of almost nothing. Curling into a ball over a hot water bottle and swearing helped a bit. Lasted about 8 hours then pretty much suddenly stopped (nut ball broke up?).

ButterflyOil · 05/01/2023 13:46

Yes it can! Do some yoga stretches, you can find some videos for digestion support on youtube which can really help.

CottonSock · 05/01/2023 13:46

Waves of pain and diarrhoea was appendicitis for me! I wasn't passing wind though. Are you actually farting much?

fuckweasel · 05/01/2023 13:55

My 'trapped wind' ended up being an infected gallbladder and resulted in IV antibiotics and subsequent surgery. I went to out of hours doctor as advised by 111 (abdominal pain lasting more than 24 hours.)

OuchMyTummy · 05/01/2023 14:50

Thank you all again, so much.

I'm still thinking probably trapped wind, but actually wondering a bit about gallstone now. Have been sick once, though it was prompted by trying to belch. Pain has mostly been upper middle abdomen, between belly button and bottom of sternum. It's crampy and horrid. Not constant, though, is a bit relieved by burping, and also had a phase of being lower abdomen instead.

Thought paracetamol had helped, but it's now back :(

Has been going since 7am

Thanks again

I would start thinking about seeking medical advice personally OP.
All the best

Just want to update in case it's of use to anyone in future. I spoke with doctor after I'd had pain for approx 8 hours (on and off). Basically I was told to go straight to a&e. As it happened, it started to pass just as I was getting ready to go, so I didn't end up seeing a doctor in person. But apparently when there's pain that bad and for that long (I had also vomited once, due to the pain I think) they need to have a look and possibly do investigations to rule out blockage, gallstones, etc. Still no idea what it was, but it was f**king horrible.

Thanks all for the advice yesterday.

If it happens again do get seen. I think I had appendicitis 4 times before having it out.

When I had my 'labour' like attack that I needed to call the ambulance for, the pain had passed by the time I was seen (ambulance never actually came so my dad took me to local minor injuries unit). They suggested the same but with a house to run, and not being in pain anymore, I didn't.
The following 2 days I started peeing very dark urine and going yellow, so ended up in a&e over that weekend and was confirmed gallstones.
Watch out for dark urine and jaundice, or indeed any further pain.
Hope you don't suffer anymore pain, if it's gallstones/pancreatitis it's unpredictable and debilitating. And pancreatitis is actually quite serious and can cause long term complications so don't mess about!

JustDanceAddict · 06/01/2023 17:40

Really bad! I have passed out from it.
