Hi all, wondering if I could get some insights. Close friend of mine has been having the following symptoms

  • breathless on walks (always had this from what I can remember but worse recently)
  • Mole in centre of chest (size of a raisin) has got darker and is painful to the touch- pain seems to have booked behind the mole and now inside the chest?
  • the mole is painful which I thought was a good sign? Also the mole is not bleeding. But it has gotten bigger.

He rang 111 2 days ago but still hasn't had a call back. Bugging him to go to the doctors to get checked!

@Lindtcat would a doctor be able to tell if it's cancer or not? Has he been referred to the hospital as they are worried maybe? Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm worried the hospital will take ages

Sorry do you mean he has been sent to the hospital tonight ? Or been referred there for an appointment. If he's been sent to the hospital tonight, I would assume the GP was worried yes. A GP wouldn't be able to tell whether a mole was cancerous or not, the GP however would be able to tell if it looked suspicious. But further tests would need to be done to investigate properly.

@Lindtcat he has been referred for an appointment to the hospital as far as I know but not the same day! Thank you

Has friend been referred as a 2 week wait? If so that means they are suspicious it’s nasty, if not it’s more routine but they want a second opinion.

HunkieDorie · 10/01/2023 21:53

He has been referred within a week. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I would assume they think mole may look suspicious. Try not to worry.

In our area any concern re a potential cancer is within 2 weeks. Then results follow tests

HunkieDorie · 11/01/2023 00:42

Thanks all. He has been referred within a 1 week so likely they think it is suspicious

I'd be surprised if the breathlessness was linked to the mole on his chest even if it is a melanoma.
Usually the 'spread' is via the lymph system if the melanoma has penetrated deep enough, , into the lymph nodes and then around the body from there.
If the mole biopsy is positive They'll likely find the nearest lymph node and biopsy that too.
