Bunion Keyhole surgery

I am thinking of doing this as my bunions have got bigger over the years. I am in no pain at all - however I would like to get them corrected as I really dislike this part of my body and do not want them to get worse.
I want to get my right foot done first as it is the worse of the two and if that all goes well I will get the left foot done.
I have never had any surgery like this before and I am scared!
Has anyone had this done?
How did you find the whole experience?

I would like to hear the good, bad and ugly!

Hello. I have literally just had this done with David Gordon on Monday. I have been suffering and putting it off for years (Now aged 47) But felt it was getting worse and did not want to end up being an old lady with a totally deformed foot! I am so far SO SO pleased that I did. I cant see it yet as bandaged up but I am in no pain at all. Stopped all pain relief on day 4. The hardest part is staying laid down to keep the foot raised for 23 hours out of every day! Just wanted to post as saw your were considering Mr Gordon. I also had a consultation with Mr Bianchi and did not get a good vibe what so ever. Mr Gordon is very professional and so far, everything has gone seamlessly. Dont put it off if its playing on your mind! Just get it done!!! xx

PS: I wanted to add that I am the biggest baby out there when it comes to anything medical. Literally was crying when I went in to be sedated. I really should not have worried! They were all so lovely! I had a total foot block and DEEP SEDATION. And it was as good as having a general but without the after effects!!. I woke up and was in no pain. I walked out of the hospital weight bearing with crutches. Day 2, the pain block wore off but was completely managed by the drugs. I had to cut back the pain rellief as reaslised they were making me feel a llittle sick but when I did, I realised that actually there was no pain!!! I can keep you posted on my progress if you like xx

Edited

Pls let me know how it goes as I want to do mine

Shilpasp · 30/04/2024 16:20

@Jesmy
pls keep me posted and would you suggest to have 2 feet done together

BBUM · 25/07/2024 08:33

I have had a consultation with Mr Gordon this week and am very keep to see an update on your progress if possible!

Jesmy · 25/07/2024 13:06

It’s been quite a slow recovery for me as I picked up an infection during surgery which meant I had a deep tissue infection which has slowed healing and meant I needed to take antibiotics for 6 weeks. To be honest I was terrified as if the antibiotics hadn’t have eventually worked apparently I would have had to gone back in to surgery to have hardware removed and samples taken of whatever bacteria had infected me in order to be treated intravenously. Don’t want to scare you but it was not the outcome I had been expecting and I’m a 48 year old fit and healthy mum that does running so it has really not been great and has been very painful. I think I was unlucky, but hard to know and worth you hearing about what can go wrong as I hadn’t considered this could happen to me for a second! It is looking okay now but my foot is still very stiff and rather alien feeling. I’m hoping this will continue to improve.

I just had to respond and share my experience with you in respect of my bunions! I had them on both feet for as long as I can remember. I hated them and felt very self conscious about them. My GP couldn't refer me as they felt that it was more of a cosmetic request rather than a medical one. However, I was very fortunate to be able to use my husband's private Bupa company policy. I was booked in a week later and back home a week after that. I decided to have both feet done at the same time. The strongest pain killer that I took was paracetamol and then it was only once after I had left the hospital! I did have to wear the special shoes for weeks after though, but I still managed to get around and I even did some cycling! I made the best decision ever to have my two front toes straightened, the surgeon said that they cut out the bunion as though it's a slice of cake I do have two tiny scars but am pain free from bunions! Absolutely loving being able to try on shoes without hiding my feet away!

BBUM · 25/07/2024 17:06

Thank you for your updates all - is everyone posting having minimally invasive aka keyhole?

Did you have keyhole surgery or traditional please?

@Jesmy thanks for your report. I am seeing Kaser Nazir for a consultation in Harley Street on 9th May he does keyhole bunion surgery. So far my private healthcare are happy to cover the consultation with Kaser as he is one of their registered surgeons, lets hope they cover the operation! OMG so want to get it done. https://www.instagram.com/footsurgeonlondon/

How did it go with Kaser Nazir please? Any update would be appreciated if poss

JezzJazz333 · 25/07/2024 17:55

I had surgery for mine! Every day I thank my lucky stars for having it done! The reason that kick started me into doing something was that my bunions had really started to hurt.

Really well thanks. Very pleased had to have a MTP plate as well as xray showed no cartilage between big toe and foot bones. Pain wasn’t bad at all only took 1 codydramol per day for two days. Then elevated for two weeks but could walk using postop shoe without crutches round the house. Then two more weeks elevated and then can wear trainers. Had review with mr Nazir one week after op on phone then zoom meeting another week later as I live miles away and took off bandage. All fine and got xray locally in Cambridge on 13th August and they will send X-rays to Mr Nazir as they did before the op. Very happy overall.

Never had bunion surgery but had surgery to repair damaged ligament in my foot a few years ago. Actually had it under a local anaesthetic with sedation. Took about an hour. Because I hadn't opted for a general anaesthetic, I was out of hospital within a few hours. Was terrified beforehand but honestly was surprised how straightforward it was and how relaxed I felt throughout it. Was properly 'Disassociated' from what was going on.

TeamPolin · 25/07/2024 20:21

Just realised this is a post from 18 months ago and I've probably responded to it twice! 😂

maeb · 15/01/2025 12:03

Hi Kittytraveller,

I hope you see this 😊

I know this thread is a few months old but I just wanted to know how your feet are 6 months on from surgery?

I'm planning on having both feet done and am researching surgeons and Kaser Nazir is on my shortlist.

Is there anything you would do differently or recommend - recovery-wise?

Thanks!

BBUM · 15/01/2025 15:07

I had my left foot keyhole bunion surgery with Mr Nazir in September - amazing! Feel free to ask me any questions :)

maeb · 15/01/2025 22:08

Hi BBUM, thanks for replying. I'm glad you're happy with your surgery.
How's your foot? Are you pain-free and walking normally now?
How long was is until you could walk 30 minutes?
How long after your consultation was the surgery? I'm hoping to get it done as soon as I can.
Do you have to pay extra for the post surgery shoes, dressings, etc?

BBUM · 16/01/2025 09:09

Hi Maeb,

I had it done (private health care) 24th September. I did my research prior and this was my second opinion. (first with David Gordon "The Bunion Doctor").

My first consultation was at the beginning of August but I chose to schedule it after my holiday in September. I wanted to plan to suit me, this was no problem.

On the day I had to be at hospital for 7am (but actually seemed too early tbh) and didn't go down for surgery until about 10am. I was eating a BLT about 12:30 and in an uber to come home approx 14:30.

I had to pay for the shoe/boot and meds - I had a pair of crutches (you will prob find someone that has). I honestly did not find myself in too much pain. I chose to stop the strong painkillers after 3 days and had no problem with this. The first two weeks are the hardest as you literally have to sit with it up all the time (on a footstool/pouffe). Washing is a pain but I got a cover thing from amazon that worked a treat. I batch cooked prior to surgery, and loaded my Sky planner up with stuff to watch. During this time he scheduled a call to make sure all ok and you can ask any questions.

Two weeks later I had to visit for him to check my foot. I was a little anxious about travelling to London but managed ok. I just took it slowly and stopped when I needed to. When the dressing was removed I sat with my mouth open - I will add a picture so you can see his work. The 6/7 keyhole stitches were removed and a lighter dressing put on. I still had to wear the boot. for another 2/3 weeks I I think.

I found it gradually got better all the time. When I started walking (I bought really soft cheap Supermarket trainers in two sizes as it does swell) it does hurt a bit and you have to trust it. I remember sitting on a wall when I walked up to the town!

I then had to go again 6th November for x-ray and check over. I remember managing ok this day (on my own - now 6 weeks post surgery) but being a bit uncomfortable. My ankle has at times swollen quite a lot and he said I really must "trust the scaffolding" - I was obviously unintentionally walking on the outside of my foot.

On boxing day we flew to Gran Canaria. I did a LOT of walking at both airports and made myself walk about 3 miles a day whilst there. I had my last consultation on 8th January. I said to him what a corner I had turned. I felt all of a sudden I was back to normal. I still have some slight swelling but that is to be expected. I am now signed off and plan to have my right foot done the same time this year (right bunion not quite so bad)

I do hope this helps. I like Mr Nazir and cannot recommend him enough.

I am not sure about having both feet done at the same time - I know some people do - he will of course advise you on that. I wish you all the luck if you decide to go ahead.

Hi BBUM,

Your foot looks amazing, just 'normal'!

I'm concerned that my expectations for recovery are too optimistic, as I thought I'd be taking hour walks at 6 weeks. So your experience is useful.

I will be using health insurance (if it's covered - new policy but with pre-existing included) Did you get a GP referral for a podiatrist or surgeon?

What made you favour Mr Nasir over Mr Gordon? I've been judging the surgeons on declared success/satisfaction rates, technique and recovery protocols as well as reviews.

SoufallGirl · 08/03/2025 16:51

I am in the process of trying to decide whether go with Nazir, Gordon or Bianchi, they all do keyhole bunion surgery. I had a consultation with Gordon a couple of years ago and got a quote for £14k for both feet, it was just stated in an email, no official letter or anything that I could take to insurance co for pre approval, so never ended up doing anything.but am seriously thinking about it again. I think 1 post was from someone that has used both Nazir and Gordon so am interested to hear experiences

TheFish00 · 09/03/2025 09:11

Hello, yes I had surgery with Mr Gordon about a year ago. I did this through my insurance. It went well but it didn’t go quite as smoothly and as painlessly as I was hoping for based on the info made available to me. I don’t know if I was unique or unlucky but my recovery was slow. At my 3 month X Ray no bone had started to fuse so for this reason I am very pleased I did not go with Bianci as he obviously does not use any hardware! I still have some pain now but certainly the first 6 months were quite painful. I was treated with multiple antibiotics as thought was a deep tissue infection but I’m still not convinced I had an infection. Happy to answer any q questions. Long and short is I’m pleased I had it done as my foot no longer looks deformed and I’m pretty much back to normal. I am very active so I was not able to run for 6 months due to the pain but all good now on that front.

Hi SoufallGirl,
I'm booked in for surgeries with Mr Nazir for bunion and tailor's bunion correction on both feet. The consultation was very straightforward. He's reassuring and comes across as personable and very competent. His website bunionsurgeon.co.uk has prices/videos/info on it.
I was initially interested in Bianchi but he's not covered with my insurer and I couldn't find any independent reviews for him.

Not a medically qualified surgeon however. And is absolutely pushing the limits on what is legally acceptable in how he describes his qualifications.

FixMyFeet · 28/09/2025 23:29

Hi there,

I'm joining the thread a bit late! but I'm hoping it's not too late to hear some recent stories and updates from anyone on the thread who has had surgery even if it's two years ago! as I'd love to hear how your feet are going. I too need bunion surgery - the pain is getting too bad to ignore!

I have the added complication of undergoing cancer treatment. Dr Bianchi won't see me because of it even though I finished chemo and radiotherapy quite a while ago.

I'd read about David Gordon and was considering him but reading about the post surgery infection on this forum, it has unfortunately put me off 😬

Dr Nazir was an option but I didn't realise per the previous post that he's not a qualified surgeon! 😲

Has anyone been to any other surgeons in London that they could recommend or had recent experiences with the doctors on this thread? I'm absolutely desperate to get some quality of life back as my cancer drugs have somewhat taken it away 😢 but the thought of more surgery after already having had major surgery for my cancer is making me a bit anxious

deesdeli · 29/09/2025 10:12

@FixTheBone Hi there - which Dr is not medically qualified? Bianchi or Nazir? I still havent done anything about my feet yet but plan to do so very soon as it is the right time
