Dd has had hives like rash all over body since this morning. It didn't go with piriton and I cant put it down to anything at all. She does not normally suffer from allergies etc. It didn't bother her so I left it. Tonight she woke up screaming and is unable to walk, complaining of pain in both feet and cant stand on them. I have local surgerys but she is scared stiff of docs and is screaming so loudly. On my own and 7 months pregnant with a toddler in bed so cant physically drag her.

NHS still have not called back.

Should I call an ambulance

MInd you we have been at A&E with plenty of nothings, but almost all the staff (i can think of only 1 exception) have been fine and said we were right to take them in.

I just blame MIL and say she advised us to come in, and that I am a nursery nurse so they take us seriously .

Wotz · 03/02/2008 23:41

Now your DH is there with a car I would take her now, rather then wait.

But it's hard to know without seeing how she is.

TBH the swelling is worrying.

What was she doing the day that might have caused an allergic reaction? Pets, pollen, plants did you go somewhere different that usual?

sb6699 · 04/02/2008 00:20

Non medical person - but I would take her to the all night surgery now tbh.

Doesn't matter if it's nothing - they will be well used to it.

Better to be on the safe side. Keeping everything crossed she is okay.

loopylou6 · 04/02/2008 08:30

how is DD HS?

Flllightattendant · 04/02/2008 08:37

This sounds very frightening, I hope she is Ok. Does sound like a severe allergic reaction.

belgo · 04/02/2008 08:51

I hope she got her to a doctor/a&e. I probably would have gone straight to a&e - a sudden sever allergic reaction can be very serious.

horseshoe · 04/02/2008 12:10

Hi...the docotr was quite rude and diagnosed an allergic reaction without looking at her. tried to false her to walk and she cried and he got angry and shouted at her. I was fuming and as a result I am changing doctors.

Given her antihistamine which hasn't cleared it up.

She is still unable to walk. She hasn't forgotton herself once despite me saying she can play on her scooter or telling her to come get sweeties. I am off to the hospital now to get some answers. If it is an allergic reaction I really want to know what is so bad that she looses the use of her legs!!!!!

hanks for all of your help everyone. I will let you know how she gets on.

Rash plus pain/swelling in joints could be rheumatic fever. Has she had a sore throat recently? I hope you get on OK at the hospital. (Put in a complaint about the doctor. His attitude sounds disgraceful, especially given your DDs rear of doctors).

horseshoe · 04/02/2008 12:20

Yes when we said she was scared as we walked in his exact words were....hmmphhh why are you here then?

I'm feeling a bit silly after my visit to him but still going hospital. rather feel silly and have complete peace of mind.

This is the second time I have EVER taken her to the docs so I'm surprised I was treated like that.

Anyway, I am off now.

Yes you should definitely go-being unable to walk is hardly a minor problem. I am sure the hospital will be much more sympathetic-tell them about your DDs fear as well. They are usually excellent with young chidren.

JodieG1 · 04/02/2008 12:29

I really hope she is ok. Hope you get some answers. I would also put it a complaint about that dr.

There was a letter in the local paper praising our local gp over christmas as a mother took her baby 3 times to the out of hours and they said nothing was wrong but on the Monday morning the baby was still screaming when touched and not herself. She called the gp and spoke to a dr right away, he got them straight down there and had already called an ambulence. He gave the baby an injection for meningitis and she was very lucky that the outcome wasn't worse. It was meningitis but the out of hours drs didn't diagnose it.

sb6699 · 04/02/2008 13:21

I would complain about him too - what exactly does he think an out of hours surgery is for?

He has no right to shout at your poor dd who was obviously distressed.

Glad you got a diagnosis anyway and hope you get some better answers at the hospital.

LilRedWG · 04/02/2008 13:36

Good luck at the hospital - I hope you get some answers.

flamingtoaster · 04/02/2008 13:44

Hope the hospital is helpful and your DD is soon feeling better.

BigBadMouse · 04/02/2008 15:41

Can't believe that doctor! I'd have left him needing some severe treatment himself. Your poor DD . I'd definitely change doctors and make a complaint about him at the same time (you'll probably find that others have complained about him too). It was hardly a minor problem she had was it.

Good for you to not be put off and take her to the hospital for some proper answers. Hope it all gets sorted out.

Tiggiwinkle · 04/02/2008 17:59

How did you get on horseshoe?

horseshoe · 04/02/2008 18:23

Hi,

We literally just got back.

Hospital was excellent. they gave her some more anti-histamine as was pretty sure it was an allergic reaction. That didn't work for the rash or anything.
Then they had an psycological assessment done on her saying that sometimes kids get scared of the pain etc.

They could see she was having problems and not psycological. They gave her a teddy bear to keep and gave her some calpol which seemed to start working on the rash.

The doctors checked her and said that they think the allergic reaction rash has caused a burning sensation in her feet which has led to pain when standing. It's not an internal problem or anything like that.

She had more meds and she just started to stand in last 20 minutes. The rash is alot lighter now aswell.

Have no idea what caused such a reaction so just have to do trial and error for the time being and see if she reacts again in the future

I'm glad she is ok

belgo · 04/02/2008 19:03

I'm really glad you took her to the hospital and saw doctors who know what they are doing, and she was properly assessed and treated.

Wotz · 04/02/2008 19:22

horseshoe that's great news.
You will have to make a note of what you did on Saturday that might have caused the reaction.

One of my friends dds is allergic to dog saliva and not the the actual animals, which she is fine with. Only found out after playing ball with her friends dog.. It could be anything. Good luck.

flamingtoaster · 04/02/2008 21:26

Glad your DD is now more comfortable. Hope you find out soon what caused it so you can avoid it happening again. You'll be able to sleep easier tonight!

LilRedWG · 05/02/2008 08:33

I'm so glad that the hospital were so great! Definitely change GPs to a more sympathetic one.

edam · 05/02/2008 08:56

Relieved you went to hospital and saw some sensible doctors. Do complain about the idiot GP - explaining what the hospital did and said. Was it your own GP or just one who covers out of hours?
