DH has had asthma since DS1 was 3 months old. (4 yrs ago)

We live in a city.

DH has had cough after cold after feeling grotty since his flu jab 3 months ago.

He coughs all night and sleeps on the couch.

He has seen the asthma nurse and upped his meds. She said it will be 6 months before he is back to normal.

We have 3 DCs aged 4 and under and it is exhausting.

Any advice would be great.

I have asthma, and have had since I was very young.

when I have a cold, I double my becotide dose (under advise from the nurse).

also, sleeping propped up really helps. If I lie down, my lungs kind of fill up and I cough loads.

also using vicks etc seems to work on my chest as well as my nose.

hth

I am nagging him to see his Gp.

I will suggest propps and vicks.

He had his meds upped recently.

Whats he on? Hmm ventolin and becatide, tho the delivery system changed recently.

His peak flow should be 625 i think, and is 500 at the moment.

I use ventolin and becotide too. I double the becotide when I have a cold.

Benitez · 03/02/2008 22:34

Perhaps if he goes tothe GP he could discuss doubling the dose. Thank you.

i was told to double my dd's becotide dose during a cold then goping down after the cold.

also vicks does help them as well.

SNOWBall4girlz · 03/02/2008 23:22

I find olbas oil helps too clears the air ways --have they not suggested serevent?
mixture of becotide and serevent as an short term alternative?

SNOWBall4girlz · 03/02/2008 23:22

seretide that is

KatyMac · 03/02/2008 23:26

500 out of 625 isn't too bad

DH barely makes 300 from 850 & that's when he's well

Tonnes of vick, sleeping propped up, minimise his dairy intake & see if it improves

Watch changes in temp (inside to out or vice versa)

Benitez · 04/02/2008 22:12

Thanks everyone.

You might be surprised if he cuts down on dairy - it can have a dramatic effect

swedishmum · 05/02/2008 09:52

Symbicort has honestly changed my life. Also second cutting down on dairy with a cold (wheat for me too - don't know if that's the same for other people), and I get dh to pummel me on the back when I'm wheezy. It helps. Have a bath sitting up or slightly forwards, lie on your side or if I've been very bad I've slept in a chair to keep me upright. Changing from QVar to Symbicort has really been the life-changing thing for me though. Good luck - it's horrible, especially when you have small children and don't have the energy to lift up your arms let alone walk to the kitchen.

ejt1764 · 05/02/2008 09:55

I can second symbicort - I was swapped onto it about 18 months ago, as the seratide I was on was making me cough like I smoked 40 a day!

The symbicort has given me my life back - I have only had to ask for 2 new salbutomol inhalers in the past year ....

ThomasTankEngine · 06/02/2008 16:10

Thank you. I am forwarding all this information on to DH.
