Walkers' thread (those training for a moonwalk or those just wanting to get a bit fitter... sign in here)

OK... following on from another thread, I thought I'd start this for those of us who are not really that into exercise but who are struggling to get a bit fitter.

I am working towards doing the Edinburgh moonwalk in June (and would prefer it if no-one mentioned just exactly how blardy far it's going to be just yet [panic emoticon]), and am struggling to find the time and the inclination to train.

Anyone else in a similar position? Hippipotami? Quint? Don't leave me walking all on my own...

Will come back and post again when I've got off my bum and done some exercise!

OP posts:
Posey · 19/04/2008 20:41

Oh (again!), and nice dress!

hippipotami · 19/04/2008 20:45

Hi Posey, yes I feel much happier having made the decision. I was very worried about ringing my friends and letting them know. In the end I rang my best friend and she is letting the rest of the team know. Now I have to tell all those who sponsored me that I am not doing it. Sigh...

Posey glad to hear you had a good holiday

Back to school and normality on Monday.

hippipotami · 19/04/2008 20:48

Counting, sorry I did not want your last two posts go unnoticed. You are right. And I am indeed focusing on things I am going to do once my feet are fine.

I may do a race for life (but walk it) and am thinking about a swimathon and a bikeathon.

Posey · 19/04/2008 20:54

Agree with the at returning to school. I love having the kids home.
Now just one more term until dd leaves primary school , surely not, where has the time gone? I can't possibly be old enough to have a child at secondary school

If you do do a swim or bikeathon let us know and I'll sponsor you.

hippipotami · 19/04/2008 21:11

Thanks posey

Ds will be going into y5 in september, and dd will have finished reception
They are growing up too quick, and it seems worse somehow once they are at school. (because you count in school terms I guess)

If I had my way we would live on a deserted island and the dc would never go to school.

I have to be happy though, they both love going to school, so I must not grumble...

Ellbell · 19/04/2008 23:04

My dd (yes, the same clutsy one who induced my ice-skating injury ) was very taken with the tree trekking when we were at CP in February. Glad you had a good time Posey.

I think that time goes faster the older they get. Dd1 is in Year 3 this year and it has flown by.

Take care, all, and have a good walk tomorrow Posey. I'll be riding tomorrow but otherwise resting. My slightly dodgy ankle is feeling a bit sore now, but I'm pretty sure it'll be OK by tomorrow.

Oh, and glad you both like the dress. I tried it on in a tiny cubicle with both dds in there too, playing the very unamusing game of trying to whoosh open the curtains and expose mummy's knickers to the world. Gee, thanks girls!

Ellbell · 19/04/2008 23:05

Sorry - that wasn't very clear, was it. DD1 was taken with the idea of the tree-trekking. I think you had to be 8 to do it, so we escaped... this time!

MsBombastic · 20/04/2008 10:50

Just got in from a ten miler. Took 2 hours 40 mins. Running a bath. Feel terrible . Very hungry. How on earth will I do 2 and a half times this?

Ellbell, I need to read back about your ice-skating injury. I had one too, on 3/1. Dislocated elbow. Ouch.

Off to sink in bath.....

hippipotami · 20/04/2008 10:54

Wow MrsB, 10 miles in 3hrs40 is amazing!! That is a lot lot lot faster than I would ever manage. You are doing great!!
Did you eat before you went out?

I went on a 7 miler having had only a banana for breakfast, and when I got home 3 hours later (see how slow I am) I got the worst headache in the world, probably due to lack of food and water..

Have a nice bath, and relax for the rest of the day.

ps - I do think those of you doing the full moon are either mad or crazy

hippipotami · 20/04/2008 10:54

2hr40, sorry, accidentally added an hour onto your time...

MsBombastic · 20/04/2008 13:35

Right. Have bathed, eaten and slept (really lovely sleep on sofa until rudely awoken by DS, cookbook in hand, asking if we could make lemon syllabub this afternoon .

Have read back now and caught up.

Hippi, glad you are feeling better about things and have plans for other healthy stuff. I have set up a weekly badminton game (arranged it just before dislocating elbow) with a group of friends - v. casual but at least 4 usually turn up and we dib in and out. It is great fun , and a lot more aeorobic (sp?) then I realised it would be. Just another idea, for when you are recovered of course.

Glad to see you still on the thread though - your encouragement much appreciated as I really am the struggler in my group - and although the time/distance doesn't read badly there is no way I could do it without the others there spurring me on.

Ellbell I like the dress too; haven't looked in Wallis for ages ....will wait till I have new fab figure thanks to walking.......

Long post. Will shut up now and go and discuss syllabub.....

MsBombastic · 20/04/2008 13:37

Should have read 'at least 4 usually turn up and IF THERE ARE MORE we dib in and out'.

Oh and yes Hippi, I am both mad and crazy in equal measure!

hippipotami · 20/04/2008 14:38

Enjoy the syllabub. What is syllabub??

Posey · 20/04/2008 16:47

Well done MrsB on that walk! Defo make sure you fuel up well before and eat along the route - muesli bar/banana/raisins/apricots/dextrose tablets all really help.

I did 8 miles this morning, in 1 hour 48 mins. Hope to manage the half moon in under 3 hours really as I did the fullmoon in less than 6 last year. But, I have no idea how fast my sister and her pals, with whom I'm walking, are planning on going.

Now am about to put the final touches to roast lamb for dinner, yumyum

MsBombastic · 20/04/2008 19:48

Syllabub is creamy dessert, usualy made with egg yolk, but this one isn't and is very easy, in fact ds did most of it on his own. Very yummy but possibly not that healthy!

This is it (hopefully).

Ellbell · 20/04/2008 20:01

Mmmm... that sounds nice, MsB. Well done on today's walk, too. Excellent going. You too, Posey. That's quick! I rode today but didn't walk as dh has been at work all day (not home yet). My dodgy ankle was aching a bit after yesterday, but it seems OK again now.

My ice-skating injury wasn't too serious (just a bruise really), but was quite painful for a while. If you see a very fast-moving, very uncoordinated, blonde 8-y-o-sized missile hurtling towards you across the ice... Get Out Of The Way! It could be Babybell... and she's dangerous . Dislocated elbow sounds horrible. I broke my elbow about 10 years ago (slipped on ice, but on a pavement!) and it was excruciating.

I wish I had a fab new figure for the dress, but I am going to have to make do with my usual blobby old one. Oh well!

hippipotami · 20/04/2008 20:49

Oh that syllabub sounds nice. It even has wine in it
Have printed out the recipe and will attempt to make it soon.

Ellbell · 20/04/2008 20:57

LOL @ 'even has wine in it'! I was wondering if you could substitute Limoncello (brought back from Italy) for the wine to give it a lemony (but very alcoholic) twist!

By the way, Hippi, you are dead right... I am both crazy and mad and a little bit loopy too.

Ellbell · 20/04/2008 20:57

PS Would not feed it to the DDs with Limoncello in, though! As we've seen, my DD1 is dangerous enough, without giving her alcohol!

mimsum · 20/04/2008 22:53

sorry to hear about your foot hippi - I hope you're feeling better soon - and don't get stressed about not doing the moonwalk, it's more important for your long-term health to recover completely

I did about 16 miles today but went out with the group for the first time and it took aaaaages - we set off just after half six and didn't get back home till 11 - there's quite a variation in speed/fitness levels and obviously we have to go at the speed of the slowest ...

ho hum

and my big toe started hurting at about 14 miles - off to the chiropodist tomorrow so here's hoping I haven't done anything serious to it ...

hippipotami · 21/04/2008 08:03

16 miles [gasp]

Mind you, in four and a half hours, that is qicker than I would have completed the half moon in....

Hope your toe is okay!

MsBombastic · 21/04/2008 09:31

If you are doing the syllabub for your dcs then don't soak the shortbread in the wine (or Limoncello; that is a fab idea as I have a virtually unused bottle). Mine weren't sure about that bit.

16 miles fills me with awe. But am meant to be doing a mega 20 miler on 4th May - after which we are meant to do shorter ones until the actual day/night.

Posey, thanks for snack advice. I will do this on next one as definitely needed a boost of some sort on way back. dh has energy gel stuff that he eats (slurps?) when doing long cycle rides so may try that as well.

In bed last night my legs felt almost crampy - kept needing to stretch and bend them (dh not pleased at this). What do you think? Probably not enough stretching post walk?

hippipotami · 21/04/2008 11:47

Argh, am soooo frustrated....

Am stuck in an empty house, dc at school, and my friend have gone off for an 8 miler.

I am sooooooo fed up...
My foot actually does not feel too bad today, adn I am sooo tempted to just carry on.

What do I do about my bra, cap and t-shirt, I suppose I better send those back? With a letter saying I have to pull out?

MsBombastic · 21/04/2008 12:50

Not surprised you are frustrated - but don't be tempted, it really would not be a good idea. Be gentle with that foot! I am offering you a virtual cuppa - tea/coffee? Milk/sugar? Now are you sitting comfortably?.......

Re. bra etc. Have you considered volunteering as a helper on the night? Presume they need lots and then you could maybe wear your gear - would be quite hard work i should think so you would be more than entitled to. Or maybe you think that would make you feel worse cos you weren't actually walking?

Have you tried giving Moonwalk HQ a ring to discuss options? Loads of people must have to pull out for many difft reasons.

Spoke to a friend this morning who is recovering from Bowel cancer. She hadn't heard of the Moonwalk, but does know me very well, and she just kept repeating down the phone "26 miles. 26 MILES" in an astonished voice, which didn't exactly inspire confidence.

hippipotami · 21/04/2008 13:45

Oh MrsB, Ihad to laugh at your friend and her astonishment at 26 miles. I know I have said it before, and I will say it again, I am in awe of those of you who do 26 miles!!

Am snuggled on the sofa with toast, a glass of mile and the laptop.
Did some general housework (pegging out washing etc) this morning, and my heel now aches. That tells me enough really

Thanks for hte offer of tea and cake and the cushion plumping, I really really appreciate it
