DD had her 4th febrile convulsion in 6mths on Friday and they seem to be linked to recurrent ear infections. Am desperately waiting for her ENT appt on March 17th. But I am beginning to become more anxiousd there is something more serious wrong. I know that if they have 1 febrile convulsion they are prone to more but does this seem an excessive amount from anyones own experience.

My ds had 3 febrile convulsions in the space of 9 months.Scarey as hell eh?
He has had a high temp since but we have managed to bring it down to avoid another one.
I was told by the specialist to phone for an ambulance-we always did anyway- and to ask the ambulance staff to take a blood glucose level test asap.Since he hasn't had one we haven't had one done.
How is your LO now?

She is alot better now but what worried me this time was the doc at hosp could not see any ear/throat inf, although subsequently the next day she was tugging her ear and the on call doc I spoke to on phone prescribed anti bs as a precautionary measure. what was the blood glucose level test for?

It isw v scarey and we always call an ambulance and go to hosp.

They wanted to see if there we any underlaying problems.
I don't mean to sound patronising but i not sure that everybody knows to mop then down with tepid water NOT cold.It was news to me.

Not patrionising, as we only know cos paramedics told us.

Thanks

Are they definitely ferbile convulsions? (are they associated with a sudden rise in temp)? my friend was told (after her son had several seizures that they always label the first one febrile - in his case they changed his mind.

nobodysfool · 03/02/2008 19:22

two of my sons convulsions were linked to ear infections as well.
How old is your lo?
I can honestly say there have been no long term affects from the convulsions and he hasn't had one for nearly a year now.Though i still check his temp every 5 mins when he is ill and listen to the monitor like a hawk!It turns your stomache in knots doesn't it.

mummynumnum · 03/02/2008 19:27

they are usually linked to high temps. She was hot when we were woken to her having the febrile convulsion on Fri but she was fine all day and eve and there was no warning.

I am sure it is her ear but the more it happens the more anxious I am becoming and the doc at the hosp said could not see an ear infection. was not overly impressed by him. She is 19mths old. Sleeping peacefully tonight.

Thats strange our ds convulsions were also all at night. We dont overheat his room and like you had no prior warning.
The first time he had one they couldn't find anything wrong and told us it must have been a night terror!PRATS.A few days later he was pulling like mad at his ears so i took him to see the doc and she said he had a double ear infection.
Isn't strange they seem to have no ill effects after while we are left feeling exhausted with lack of sleep and worry.
I'm sure your lo will be just fine.
If you wanted to speed things up call the ENT dept and ask to go on the cacellation list if there is one and explain the convulsions. They will probably try to move things along quicker.

Thanks for the suggestion nobodys fool that sounds like a good idea. I will do that tomorrow.

Two of my children have had febrile convulsions dd3 had three in as many months,It was explained to me at hospital that one of the causes is a very sudden rise in tempreture which explains why sometimes we had no warning.I had a ear themometer and gave calpol at the slightest rise,to the point that I was becoming obsessive about the whole thing, childrens temps do go up and down for no reason early evening for instance. Now they are 7 and 9 years old and no fits since about 3 and no lasting ill effects, but reading your post brought it all back I really know how scary they are.

My son had no warning before his- but his temp did suddenly shoot up. My friend who was initially told incorrectly her son's convulsions were febrile- had a different situation- her son had no temperature at all- although he wasn't well. In the end he needed different treatment (he's fine now).
